Following my prang in Italy can anyone tell me if the 968 rear wing is a replaceable panel or part of the monococque (sp)? I mean the wings over the wheel arches and not the aerodynamic appendages here. Looking at the car the rear wing seems to merge into the C post with no visible join making me think it is not a replaceable panel. If this is the case and the damage can not be panel-beaten out am I looking at a write off

Ouch commiserations.

I must admit I've never seen any rear wings advertised and I've just looked through all the parts websites that I normally use and haven't seen a 944/968 rear wing offered. However I do know that Clubautosport do a conversion kit from 924 to 968 that includes the wider rear wing so hopefully there is a proper part that can be welded on, just not as easy as the bolt on front wing.

Good luck, sounds like you had quite a holiday

The panel you are talking about is the rear quarter panel, it starts at the end of the sill under the door, includes the B-post (door shut panel) & quarter window aperture and continues to a joint above the rear light. Replacing this panel is a fairly major job and will be around £1500-2000 fitted, so it may be that it is more economical to simply repair the panel.

My advice (provided that it is not too far gone) would be to repair the panel to save you disturbing the factory seams and joints, asuming that you can find a panel beater up to the job....

Sorry to hear about your bad luck
My rear wing has got a few problems - possibly due to an unrepaired bump cracking the paint round the light cluster. This has resulted in rusting that is serious enough to require a re-fabricated section in a rather awkward position and as there is some surface rusting on the leading edges of the wheel arch due to erosion of the armourfend the whole wing will need to be resprayed. With all but one of the other wheel arches in a similar state, I have been quoted £800 for the work - which I think is quite reasonable. So if you can find somewhere that will repair the panel it shouldn't cost too much

Thanks for all the feedback. Not worried about the cost, as it’s an insurance job. I’m more worried about the insurance company trying to write it off if they’re presented with a 2K plus bill to repair a 10-year-old car that’s only insured for 11K. I’ve heard some pretty silly stories about insurance companies writing off perfectly repairable cars because it’s too much hassle for them to sort out. Especially when they’re older models. The work will probably be done by a Porsche centre so I’ll have to wait and see what they quote.

I guess if they do try to write it off I could buy the salvage from them and get it repaired myself as per one of the suggestions above.
