Hi all, I own a 12 month old boxster s which is fully loaded with goodies - Climate control, PSM etc.I am more than pleased with it as I have owned two Griffs before this and as far I'm concerned there is no comparison but that's another thread ( don't even start on that one !)
The question is - What benefits or improvements do you get by getting on the next rung of the porker ladder by having 911 Carrera 2 for example ?
But still remembering that I enjoy the boxster alot already, will the fun factor increase if I go up this expensive ladder ? Do you get more thrills for your quid ?

This maybe the start of a long thread but will be very interested with your comments if anyone has had the same thoughts.

What could be better than a Boxster S?

A Ruf 3600S perhaps?

Actually. I had a demo ride in Daz's 996 Turbo and, although I would miss the mid-engined balance of the BoxS, the unbelievable GRUNT coupled with the sophistication and four wheel drive make a tempting option.

Its not a cheap upgrade though. So far I am not sure that a C2/C4 cab is enough of an upgrade - although there are a few PHers who swear by 'em.

X50 Turbo Cab: In my dreams......one day perhaps!

Yes, the power, then the power, and the extra few buckets of power in the boot.

The best day to day bit is you don't get that bloody whine from the transmission.

In my humble opinion the Boxter "S" is the best value Porker in the range, it's a great car & it's hard to justify the extra £20k-sh for a 911 & then again another £25k more for a Turbo !!!
But as we all know this Porsche ownership thing is a slippery slope & you will end up owning a 911 eventually.
If it was me I would keep my Boxter S for another year & put a deposit down for a new 997 series 911 due out next September. Go tin top, with sports suspension, sports exhaust, plus a few other goodies & you will have a car that is likely to get your money back (in the first 6 months anyway) if you don't fall in love with it & then the new Boxter & 997Turbo are due out in 05..........slippery slope !!!.

Completely agree - I have a 996 C2 and wonder whether I might not have had the same fun for less money in a Boxster S. It seems to me that the S is every bit as quick and fun as a standard Carrera in the real world. I also think it sounds great, but not everyone will agree.

If I didn't need those rear seats (which I do) then I don't think I could justify the extra expense, penny pincher that I am.

So why have I been dreaming about a turbo recently?.... It's a disease, I'm afraid, you just can't help yourself. You may as well give in to the inevitable.

I drive a 996 C4 and was had on loan a Boxster S for 5 days whilst mine was being serviced by my local OPC. I was amazed how much i enjoyed the 'budget' Porsche. A few times i found myself wondering if mine is really worth £30k more?
But im in the same situation now with a 996 turbo, is that really worth £30k more than the Carrera?

Thanks for the info. It seems that the head says stay with the boxster - but the heart wiil eventually say go for a 911. Not convinced just yet that I should make the 20k jump to a C4 but as you say slippery slope !!

Here is a simple test for you. Go and sit in a 993. If your first impression is 'what a bloody awful interior', stick with your Boxster. If it's 'I don't understand why people complain about the interior in these cars, I can see the rev counter perfectly...' Get a 911 (of any age). Oh, and if you want a proper quick car, get a turbo.

This is my fourth Porsche ( GT3) in 30 years, the first was a 1970 lhd 911E, in between I`ve owned a cross selection of the weird & wonderful. I`ve still got the Griffith 500 & a Focus RS, but nothing compairs to the event of driving the Porsche. I`ve not driven a Boxster , they look to me just "right" especially the Stolla , anybody else seen one ?

I drove a 996 with a sports exhaust that left a good impression , just not "edgey" enough for me , too civilised but could you tour a continent in a GT3 as you could in 996? The final decision is always a tough one, but as long as it a Porsche , does it matter,?

Yeah, some of the older models can be good fun. I won't mention any models here, tho'

Interestingly, out of all the Golf GTis I've driven (mk2, mk3, mk4) the mk2 was the most fun. Maybe it works with Porsches, too, as Evo magazine reckoned that duck tailed pensioner - the 2.7RS - outshone the 996GT2...

When changing cars we test drove "old" 996 Carrera 2 Cab and the "new" face lift 996 4 cab (got to have a cab for wind in the hair ) , but we stuck with the Boxster S both times.

The 996s as said above are just a bit more civilised, bit less feed back, not as sensitive to throttle adjustments mid corner. However that extra little bit of refinement might well be handy on a long trip, the performance is noticably better makes it a quicker car everyhwere, particularly useful is the extra in gear acceleration handy for relaxed day to day driving when you wish to go quickly with out too much fuss, Oh and large people can fit in it .

The real crux for us was we have a car for big long trips, the Boxster S is more for fun (smaller 2 seat cabin feels a little more "sporty") and the right speced cab was £72k Great cars though

Maybe there is just a different mentality to Boxster driving?
They are the cheaper car in the range and there are quite a few buyers who buy a Porsche,,,have no clue whether it is mid or rear engine..Porsche don't even let you see the engine anyhow.

When I had my 996 not once did a Boxster overtake me, where as I may have gone past a few....

Seriously not trying to give it the what a great driver I am,because I am more than aware of my inadequacy, just making an observation on some Boxster, buyers,,clearly not those who would post on a Porsche enthusiast forum.
