Sounds like you have found a good value Specialist there, again shame I am so far away

Curiously you are the third Porsche owner I have heard of recently with cracking between the tread on Bridgestone tyres, though the others were on SO2's.

Do you know if the tyres are quite old or if the car has stood for a while? One of the others I know complained to Bridgestone and sent them away for inspection but had no joy.

Enjoy your car and welcome to the fold

I checked the history and found a full set of SO1s were fitted in '98 - 15,000 miles ago, then a set of rears were fitted in '01 - 7,000 miles ago. All 4 tyres still have between 6 & 7mm tread depth left. The cracking is only on the fronts, between the outermost and next tread blocks, both sides.

So the fronts are over 5 years old! did any of the other owners mention the tyres flling apart? gulp!

Nope, both guys I know noticed the cracking and replaced the tyres before anything drastic. I think one of the codes on the sidewall refers to the year of manufacture. Dunno which one tho

It seems you have a decision

As you suspected... my trusted tyre company commented on the cracking in the grooves. They immediately knew where it would be, his comment was, it's usually evidence of the tyres sitting around on the car for a long time, without driving them. The PO did 7,000 miles in the previous 2 1/2 years. But he reassured me that it's known about and it's nothing to worry about but stopped short at ok'ing them for track day use.

Well after the recommendation of Zest in Aldershot by 'Heyou' my 944 is booked in on wednesday for a thorough going over

For anyone interested, my impression of the place and the owner Mike is extremely favourable. We sat down is his office to discuss my requirements and he showed me a set of the most beautifully engineered fuel injection components. Real works of art. I said that I bet they cost a foirtune, where do you find parts like that? He replied that they were made to his own design, on the premises and will liberate an additonal 100bhp from the Testarossa that they are destined to be fitted to

Now I am a cynical soul, but Mike is not flash, he is softly spoken and as he takes you on a tour of his facilites and continues talking with real pride about his work....you believe him

I will keep you posted to see if the reality lives up to the first impression
