I recall that Ninemeister, those masters of tuning 911's, are not fans of varioram.
I seem to recall that they junk the varioram kit when upgrading and generally improving 993 engines.
Having said that, I would be happy to have a varioram - but more important is the rest of the car IMO.
I'd rather have a brilliant non-varioram than an average car with varioram.

The vario-ram engine has a sort of "spider" for an inlet manifold sitting central on top of the engine. The non vario-ram has two large rounded manifolds either side on top of the engine.
My advice would also be to treat each car on it`s own merits dis-regarding whether or not it`s a v-ram. The small theoretical gains will, in reality at this age, be out weighed by differences in a particular engine`s performance. If the injector patterns are a little off for instance you`ve lost your gain.

The wiring loom issue affects all 993s including the RS, we have seen them with the looms breaking up.
All the Varioram intake does is improve intake resonant tuning in the mid range, i.e. from 2500 to 4000 rpm. In practice the standard VR is faster than the non-VR but once remapped there is nothing to chose between them, over 4000 they would have similar performance levels.
The non-VR manifold is lighter and has a greater potential for upper level tuning due to its cleaner intake tract design.
The 993RS VR is not one of my favourites, the ports are badly designed for the power level that they have and in my opinion restrict the power significantly.
