Anyone else been?

I've just come back from that area. The factrory is quite impressive, the museum less so. Its very small. The selection of cars was quite impressive, though:

Boxster cut-away, cayanne cut-away and chassis design (with the slogan "cayanne: the 3rd Porsche" everywhere), Porsche 956, Le mans winning 917, Gruppe B prototype, 996 Turbo cutaway, Porsche "number 1", 98 winning GT1, lauda's McLaren F1 car, an Indycar, a nondescipt mid-80s Carrera and.....

a 944 Turbo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot beleive it. So, the next time 911 owners snub the waterdcooled cars by saying "its not a real Porsche" just ask them why is there one in the Porshce museum, next to a Le mans winning car????

I didnt go around the factory (they do tours, but you have to book months in adavnce and there's wasnt any cancellations) and neither did I see any secret new Porsches. I did notice that there semed to be one new Porsche leaving for a test drive every 2 minutes or so- not bad for a sports car company

Oh, the Mercedes museum is larger, and much more impressive. Curiously (sic), they dont seem to mention the war much. Or how Mercedes were able to recover so quickly and produce advanced F1 and road cars, when the likes of BMW were only allowed to produce bubble
cars...

Really worthwhile, though. Fascinating dispaly of racing cars and record breaking cars. Also, driving around Stuttgart I saw a few highly-disguised cars- one wasd almost certainly a new Chrysler, with taped over badges, but a very slab-sided look. Typically American.

The other was probably the new A-class. It stopped at the lights I was crossing, but unfortunanlty I didnt notice it unitl the lights had changed and it drove past me. I had my camera handy, and if I'd have looked right I could have taken good close-up shots, interior shots, detail shots.

Oh well....

Yes, the museum is a bit small. The factory tour is well worth it (almost worth going there for that alone).
All the cars get a test run for about half an hour after they're built.
