Hi

I am looking at warranties for my 5 year old 996. Porsche does one for £995 (plus a check is needed costing £150)
Many places cover Boxsters but not 911's (Warranty Direct for example)

Anyone know a good place to get a 996 warranty ?

Are these used car warranties worth the paper they’re written on these days? I heard that there are usually all sorts of exclusions and maximum claim clauses plus when you do rarely get a failure that falls within the remit of the policy they try to wriggle out of it on the basis that it’s normal wear and tear. Warranties Direct for example got quite a slagging off from the TVR crowd a while back for using the wear and tear card to avoid honouring claims.

I would only trust a Porsche warranty myself - one that will be honoured by OPCs easily. Also: does this not come with Porsche Assistance as well? That's well worth having...

(Says he with a new BoxS that has needed Porsche Assistance FOUR times in just one year...and a warranty that has fixed the damn the car F.O.C. three times already...)

To state the bleeding obvious, you should have bought a TVR

Hence the smilies Don...

Are Porsche warranties generally good or are the general experiences much the same as the tales of woe prevalent with the Warranty Holdings TVR warranties?

You can "extend" the manufacturer's warranty on a car that hasn't yet run out of it - and I think you can do this right up to five years old....the extended warranty being as good as the original one..which is to say..it covers everything. My experience of it so far (which is extensive ) is that it is very, very good - I haven't had to pay a bean and I've had lots of lovely rental cars, recoveries, assistance, and so on.

As I understand it on an older car you can also get Porsche Assistance (essential but you can just use the RAC) and cover for most bits. Myself I would want the "joined up" service where they take the car to the dealer who fixes it and bring you a replacement car - which is paid for by the dealer until your car is fixed.

Clearly - if the car is a weekend toy rather than a daily driver or touring holiday car then you could take a different view on what is, after all, a quite expensive insurance policy.

There are decent warranties out there.

My brothers troublesome Espace is covered by an RAC warranty and they have coughed up fortunes without a quibble.

I think warranties are a source of cost to dealers and, as ever, you get what ya pay for.

If I dealer provides a warranty that he did'nt pay much for, then you're stuck. If he cares a bit, and pays a bit more, I guess you get a better product.

As ever it pays to be cautious.

Dont at all mind paying the money for a warranty thats going to cover the bits.

Its when you hear stories of them looking at bearings in blown 5000 mile Cerbera engines and suggesting that its not covered because its a wearable item I couldnt be doing with.

Can you do warranties with independants or does it have to be OPC?
