Still comes down to the same point though. You need to drive one, not just on a quick blast but for a week. Load it up, do some town work, have a blast 300 miles on the motorway, pick up a trailer, pack the christmas pressies and a couple of kids in it.

Maybe as an owner you see the inner beauty as well. I suspect we`ll have one in the fleet for a good long while to come and it takes an awful lot to impress me. I get to own and drive some wonderful gear from a range of manufacturers but still for what it is I think it`s the best on the market.

You have to remember the Cayenne owner generally won`t have the freedom to buy a 911. His circumstances dictate he needs something larger. Rather than let him go off to BMW, Mercedes, Range Rover or Japan Porsche have wisely opted to keep his custom. They will probably be selling him a 911 / boxster as a second car when finances / family / parking allow.

Porsche are never going to ditch the 911 in favour of the K-N.

If you ever need a tow in the winter at least you`ve got a few p-headers who will be able to help out now !!

If you are putting the kids in a trailer why do you need a four seater car?

Ok although offroaders drive me nuts because they are (in most cases)NEVER used off road & mainly on the shopping/school run,I don't have an issue with Porsche building a sports utility vehicle. Off roaders have become a "fashion" item & are big business, so I can see the logic in expanding their car/profit base.

BUT my issue is with it's looks, ok beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but 95% of the press agree that the car is pig ugly, so why have Porsche stubbornly stuck to a cosmetic design that has been widely ridiculed. How does this help the pride of ownership & future potential sales ???. All it needs is a new more cohesive front end & all would be well, I for one hope an early facelift is on the cards !! I appreciate that certain unattractive cars (alla some japanese rally cars) still sell by the boatload, but this is due to their special combination of fantastic value & great performance/handling against the competition, which the Cayenne doesn't offer over the likes of the BMW X5
etc.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here so please be gentle!!!!

I have been visiting this site for a couple of months and thought i'd land this time (don't mean to sound like ET!!!)

Anyway, I bought my first ever Porker on the 1st September this year and picked up a new (53) 996C2 and am really happy with it. It has exceeded my expectations. I looked at a 4/4S and Turbo and plummed for a loaded C2 as I wanted out of 4wd cars from a sports car perspective (too many Jap-mobiles in my past).

Anyway, getting back on track, just found out the wife is expecting and as she hates our Forester Turbo (with 300 bhp!!!) for getting around during the day so we went for a test-drive in a Cayenne last Friday and were given the keys for 1/2 day & a full tank of petrol. Needless to say we took full advantage and went on every surface other than off-road and from M to C roads. I was amazed at the car to say the least. Have never driven an auto before so used the tiptronic-manual-shift thing and was quite happy.

For what we want the car for, it does everything and more. I do not want it to replicate the Porsche or the Elise and I do the British Rally championship so I get my nutter experiences there. My wife and I love cars and looking at peer cars in this class, I could only see an X5, ML or Shogun as alternatives. But when I drive a car, I like to really drive a car and felt that after driving the others mentioned here that the Cayenne was the car for us.

Soooo, found one that was new with the right goodies, available immediately and pick it up this Friday.

As Porsche said in the marketing spiel to the Journos, "do not judge before you try"!!! It really is that good a car and peerless in class in my opinion.

We also do not think it's ugly. It is certainly different, but then again I always wanted an Alfa SZ and have owned 7 Imprezas over the years, so I can not comment.

Each to his or her own, but I loved it and can't wait to have 2 new Basalt Black Porsches on the driveway.

Will be happy to give regular updates of Cayenne ownership.

Welcome to PH Stuart. With a 911 and a Cayenne you can lob bricks from both sides of the fence.

Hey the SZ is a gorgeous looking car

Beauty, eye, beholder etc. but the standard Cayenne is not a homogenous design - the different elements sit uncomfortably with each other, unlike the flowing design of a 911 GT3, say. That is sadly just a point of design.

It is still a wonderfully able car and (surprisingly) good looking to many, whatever design fetishists like me may think.

Enjoy - and welcome to the board

Hi Stuart interesting & varied set of cars you have there.
I had the 2wd Carrera earlier in the year, a great car, I am sure you will enjoy it.
Good choice in the Cayenne as it would be a shame to get parking dents in the Carrera's doors when parked outside Waitrose

I wonder how you`d get on packing 3 sleeping bags, 3 bags of clothes, a small bike, some other assorted toys, a 6 man liferaft and 3 people in the 993 !!

I've been away for a few days and come back to find that I have some allies!!!! YIPPEEEE

I too am a Bassalt Black KN owner and I love it. I'm not quite sure why I bought one (no kids, no horse, no boat no caravan) but its fun anyway. Plus like most KN owners I have a couple of other toys including a new Smart Roadster which I picked up last week.

Now that is raw back to basics rear drive, rear engined fun and the shock of it is that you don't need to be breaking the ton to have a grin across your face.

For all my love of my past 911s I think that my current cars are better real world choices. The sports car that can provide fun at 40mph and the SUV which I can pile my mates in for a run to the ski slopes.

The truth is horses for courses... I've found mine.

The first law of good design. Form follows function. The look of the cayenne is largely dictated by it`s function.

Now then, here`s a thought :

A lot of people are commenting on the fact that although a 4WD most Cayenne`s won`t go off road. How many of you 911 & Boxster owners currently hold an MSA race licence and use your cars in competition ? After all the cars are race bred and in the early days of Production a Porsche customer would typically race his car at the weekend.

Luckily I don`t stand on my soap box and allow you the pleasure of your cars on the road even though my own personal Porsches are used on the race track. I wonder for instance how many of you would like to own a GT3 or RS ? Why ? You`re only going to drive to work / run the kids around / do the shopping in it ! Sure you might do the odd token track day when you potter round a circuit keeping well away from other cars but you don`t really need a GT3 or RS. A normal Porsche will do the job, in fact come to think of it a normal car like a mondeo or vectra will do the job.

Don`t get me wrong people, I know why you buy your cars and it`s for that same reason people buy a 4WD truck.

Just in case you think you can`t race a "road" car class 3 of the Porsche open currently has 4 or 5 road registered cars in it.

Happy debating.

Personally, the looks of the KN have grown on me substantially.

When first released, i wasnt impressed, but following a drive round europe, i ran into (not literally) quite a large number of them, and I have to say, In the right colors (any color as long as its black!) they look divine.

I would defo take one, but my inner devil says it would have to be the Turbo S.

I always fancied a Range Rover... but these are a REAL SERIOUS contender now.

I think you have to see one in person, to appreciate the design, photos sometimes dont do it justice / do it an INjustice.

/me Will have a look around henry;s tomorrow

Wrong Henry. It is ONE law, or tenet, of good design. Another is how it looks. Look up Gerrit Rietveld and have a look at some of his chairs - design classics but completely impractical. Or you can borrow my Phil Starck lemon squeezer sometime. Bloody useless but a classic design

Besides, a Cayenne HASN'T been designed purely with function in mind. It was a compromise between function, heritage and family form. Hence the 911-esque headlamps. Want a 4x4 that has? Buy a Land Rover Series 1 or a Willys Jeep.

With respect Henry, this is bollocks. As someone who does a lot of track work you should know that most production 911s and Boxsters are incapable of being raced out of the box. They are road cars and designed/made as such. I suggest you have a good look at Mr Hindley's 996 compared to one at AFN and give me a shiny pound coin for every difference you spot.

Coooommmeee on Henry. Just because sb-1 wants to run away to Gretna Green with you doesn't mean you can get away with stuff like this . It isn't the quantity of trackdays that is important, it is how a car performs on an individual trackday. I would rather do no trackdays than one trackday in a car that could be dangerously unsuitable in terms of brake fade etc. I agree that RSs and GT3s can mix it on track, but you can derive pleasure at many less tenths on the open road from their dynamics.

Again, you are being naughty here Mr Firman. They have tax and number plates but they will not be standard, unmodified road cars (unless something with track capability out of the box like an RS).
