Autocar GT3 RS test
Discussion
Its worth getting this weeks Autocar for their review after driving the sublime GT3 RS. It appears Ferrari preferred the owner of the 360 CS not to bring his car along for the comparison shoot out.
They seem keen on the GT3 RS " a close second best to the finest 911 ever"

I would probably agree that it is the best real world Porsche.
But probably not the best Porsche trackslag out of the box.
The 964RS is a tad more tunable and has suspension tuned for the 'real man', who naturally sports a titanium spine, rubber teeth and an Oxford Blue in badger wrestling
Love them both, and would probably choose the 993RS over the 964RS if they were the same price.
As the owner of (previously) a 993rs and now a 964rs club sport, with a 996 GT2 in between, I’d like to pass on my thoughts on the age-old 964rs/993rs debate.
As a complete package, the 993rs is without doubt the better car.
What it combines so magically is the ability to provide a compliant usable vehicle for road use, coupled with simply stunning abilities on the race circuit. Offering only marginally more compromise than a 993 Carrera, but with steering, brakes and handling that offer on track abilities beyond that of virtually any other road car – whatever the price.
The 964rs is a more compromised, but no less intoxicating proposition. For road use it is very harsh. This is primarily due to the different compression and rebound rates in the front shock absorbers. You can in fact put 993rs front struts straight on which dramatically improves things for very little outlay.
For track use however the 964rs, especially in club sport trim is hard to beat. Lighter, easier to tune, cheaper (a consideration when using the cars for track days) and just as amazing considering the design is 5 years before the 993rs. What other twelve year old car could you drive to the ‘Ring and back, thrash round for two days, drive back and the only running costs are fuel and a litre of oil.
For me, these cars (and of course the original ‘72rs) represent the pure undiluted driving pleasures that Porsche for me is about.
Now Porsche is driven by accountants, and dictated to by bureaucrats, it is impossible to build cars of such subliminal single-minded greatness as the three eras of genuine RS’s.
The 993rs truly is the last of a breed.

The above and the Autocar article is really screwing me up. The head says that I should sell mine (not seen it since May and 10k+ of engine rebuild) but heart says I should keep it as i'll never own a 'better' car. Had convinced myself that getting rid of it and getting a GT3 RS in the future was sensible, but after reading the autocar article I'm not so sure.

For me, there is the concept of having stumped up £85 large ones, do i really want to be banging it round a track? Particularly as a 964RS on C compond rubber and a driver with less to lose may make you look a bit amateur.
makes sense to stay with what you have to me Murray.
Not GT3 RS, but I have been told of 2 instances of short term GT3 drivers going back to 993RS, one of them even paid up enough to get his old car back!

Murray, Providing your car has been put together, you will have nothing to concern yourself with.
In my experience I had less problems with my 993rs over 4 years and 15k track miles than some more modern Stuttgart equipment.
The 993rs was built with no cost or quality compromises. The new cars are built to maximise Porsche profits.

Of all the cars that Thomas at H&S can get his hands on and drive, 964RS's, Clubsports, GT3's etc., etc., he is yearning to get a 993RS Clubsport back as his 'toy'.......nuff said.
Much that I LOVE the 964RS, if it's an all round everydayer you want, the 993RS gets my vote.
Heresy? No. Just being realistic!!!
My old banger is the same bhp/tonne as a GT3 anyway!!

Still not back yet? Yikes! Are you rebuilding it as standard or with the Roock stuff you had in the car before?
When it's back, just have loads of fun in it and you won't regret it. You'll ditch the R300 I promise!

Hopefully back to the Roock level of power. Should be getting it back next week, run it in then back up to the garage to put on the rolling road and tweaked. Will be interesting to see if it's putting out the 340bhp that was claimed of it.

Murray/Domster I was up at the secret dead RS location on Sun to pick up my engine & you will be pleased to know your little red beauties are tucked up safe & sound together.
Infact I pulled in the workshop in my own little red German wagon- ok not an RS or even a porker badge on it, but I do- on occasion, drive like an aRSe- so it sorta counts Oh and when I drove out I did have a VW with twin engines- 8 cylinders & 32 valves & a potential combined bhp of 350!! so its sorta exotic enough to be in RS company, even if one of the engines was just lying in the boot
Ref your RS Murray, I was lucky enough to drive it a while back- under previous ownership, & it was the most fun & quickest 993RS ive ever driven, plus its in excellent condition & quite frankly if I was in the fortunate position that it were mine- I wouldnt sell it while I still was able to draw breath!
