993 turbo S, 996 Turbo, 996 GT2, 996 GT3
Discussion
Hi every one. I am new to Porsche. I bought my first one in February - one which got damaged in the Porsche garage and I have bored you with whinging details.
Anyway, few questions for all you who know more about the models than me. Firstly let me start by saying that I absolutely love my Targa. I tried C2 and C4 both manual and tip - and opted for Tip- just personel preference. However every one raves about the models in the title i.e Turbo, GT2, GT3.
Now please help me. I am asking for some info on the above models. Could some take my 996 Targa which is C2 as a baseline/standard (just for comprison so that I can grasp) and tell me how much better these models are? i.e in driving pleasure, braking, comfort, living with them etc?
What is the difference between GT2 and GT3?
How good is 996 Turbo compared to standard 996?
How does 993 Turbo S compare to 996 Turbo?
And if any one knows that how all of the above compare to Ferrari 360?
I dont go track days etc Just enjoy driving. All these questions might sound naive and silly but really I dont know enough about these models and need educating.
Regards
Aamir

Something I said in one of the above threads:
GT3: 381bhp 2WD 2 seater about £74k.
GT3 RS: 400ishbhp 2WD 2 seater about £85k. (some lightweight components and some whizz bang suspenaion mods, cool paint job as well)
Turbo: 420bhp 4WD 2+2 seater about £87k (softer suspension than the GT2/3.
GT2: 462bhp 2WD 2 seater about £115k.
Oh and the GT3/2 are available as a clubsport version which is even more track orientated with roll cage fire resistant material on seats etc....

GT article very good - ta for the tip.
A friend of mine picks his up this week (as his track car)... he's now SERIOUSLY worried about the carbon brake issue. Having had a 340R burst into flames, a Noble with no end of problems I think it's time he had a break (pun intended).

Steve.
As previously suggested, if your mate wishes to do trackdays look at getting a steel disc setup. There is a lot of discussion over on www.rennlist.com
From the Porsche parts bin the GT3 mkII setup would be good. Alternatively Brembo do some 8pot systems with huge discs that he may care to look at. Any of the quality UK tuners such as 9M, Phil Hindley etc should be able to advise.

Dazhoon,
Am just on the precipice of getting the boy Hindleschwabb unt Co. to ring Ferdy's knock off shop in Manheim and git me some GT3 bookit seats, all finished on matching marble grey leather, not forgetting harnesses and stirrups.
I look forward to spinning orf at Brunters with immense glee and a new found sense of resolution.

Fear not, Great Schnellerraptor - no skinny punkata for this particular beetle rotundinium, oh no.
Ample girth is a prerequisite for correct hoonage and those ample in trouser and purple of fetlock should find little difficulty in acceptable levels of clampeture within the loving embrace of the 'SV' version of Stuttgart's lesser blinged GT3 throne.

DeR, have you checked the spec & price of the seats with www.carnewal.com ? I understand they do a fitment for the 993 as otherwise it can be fun & games fitting them in the slightly more snug cabin compared to the 996.
before spending your hard earned i would reccomend sitting in a car with these seats in, the rearward vision when reversing is a little compromised......
Very comy & supportive all the same, as well as giving an aura to the beast..as if it needed any more help

Targa, you've forgotten one - the 993 GT2 [drool]
Has the GT3 RS Really got more HP? I thought the motor remained as that of the vanilla GT3, or have Porsche 'secretly' given it more power and are telling (almost) everyone that its exactly the same as the normal GT3?

Aamir,
Having owned both a 993 Turbo S and a 996TT (yes, I know how lucky I am!), I think I can give you a fair comparison.
In terms of speed, the S is a little quicker, especially in third gear. However, it was designed more for the track than road, so the suspension is brick hard and you will suffer if you go down any country roads (talking from experience, your fillings will rattle).
My choice would be the 996TT as it is the better all round car - more space, more modern interior, more toys(!), more refined and easier to live with.
Hope this helps,
Dave

Iguana,
Would you care to list the 'fripperies' that are in a GT2 that are not in a GT3, only I cannot seem to see them in my car.
Guy
errr errr ummm the boost read out on the dash...
Guy my fingers were tapping away without brain being engaged! I think in my mind I was trying to compare 996 GT2 vs 993 GT2 or somat.
So even though I know you are right, lend it to me for a week & I'll search high & low for em
I've edited post coz I was absolutely knackerd last night & pretty much infact talking absolute gibberish, I ment to delete it this morning coz I remembered what crap I had written- but was running late, oh well cest la vive.
The 993 GT2 is an altogether different beast, a totally raw virtual race-car. I would love one of them, but they are so rare, expensive and very hard to live with on a daily basis (I would imagine).
The point I was trying to make is that a lot of people and reports seem to suggest that the 996GT2 is a bit ‘lardy’ and ‘comfortable’. I find this repeated assertion very odd. The car has no more comforts in it than a GT3 (some extra leather trimming aside).
Lets look at the specs from the Porsche web-site:
GT3 Mk 2 – 1380kg
GT2 Mk 2 – 1420kg
So what are the surprise results?
The current GT2 is only 40kg heavier (+3%) than a current GT3, yet has an extra 102bhp (+27%) and an extra 255nM of torque (+66%).
Neither the new GT3, not the GT3RS have beat the ‘ring time of the GT2 either………..

Guy, Porsche figs = new GT3= 381bhp, new GT2= 462, so how is that 102bhp more?? so can we call it quits now then
I must admit I've always (wrongly) thought of the 996GT2 as a lardy car, rather than a widebodied GT3 with more grunt, which is in essence what it is.
I suppose it is lardy when compared to a 993GT2 but agreed its pretty much sod all over a Mk2 GT3.
I guess its because GT3/2 both weigh more than a standard C2, whereas in the days of the 964 & 993 RS's & the 993GT2 they were all a fair bit lighter than the lightest standard 911 in the range i.e a C2, not a fair bit heavier as they are now.
Oh and ref weights again & using Porsche figures for Mk1 GT3 vs early 996 GT2's there was however a 90kg difference (1350 vs 1440kg)
So since the early cars the GT2 has been on a bit of a diet & the GT3 has been at the pies
Ref 993GT2 yes an absolute beast, (mind you I bet yours is a bit scary in the wet!!) but you do see reasonably price ones occasionally, i.e not the £89K one that has been in the mags lately. Spotted one in Autosport for £50k'ish' (think it was £52k)
Ive been promised a ride in 750hp of 993GT2 sometime in the future, which should be fun mind you I still have nightmares about when I drove 500'ish'bhp & roughly 1000kg of 911, now that was a bit scary
04 GT2 has a power increase to 483bhp. As well as the carbon fibre gubbins.
