The Cayenne: Its butt-ugly. Deep down ugly. The kind that just can't be fixed by "nip/tuck" surgery.

Who cares.

So is the Turbo Cab - with its fat butt and ungainly nose.

I don't give a s**t.

I'd have both of them because of what they do, very happily indeed thank you.

In either of them you can be as ugly as you want to be - which for me is a damn good thing.

I did, yesterday. Had no probs getting past the school run Volvo's on the ice!!

Cayenne, yuk!! But would like to try one OFF road to see how good it is. Apparently it can climb steeper slopes than the Bimmer X5 and Merc. But then I wouldn't want to put £60K of my investment thru the green lanes and quarries I take my ten year old Pajero....

I've always kept out of this debate because I just don't care about the Cayenne, but I was in the dentist yesterday reading one of last years car magazines and they had a back to back off road only test between the Cayenne and a £7k Suzuki Jiminy (cheapest off-roader available)

Off road the Jiminy (spelling) crucified the Cayenne. If I really wanted a mud plugger and I had more money than sense I would get a Jiminy and a current 911. Buy cars that are dedicated to their role not some in between master of none.

In the meantime I've done 500 miles this week in all weathers in my trusty old 944

I did some trialling in my younger days in a SWB Land Rover S1 with a 2.6 straight six engine. It did pretty well but all the Land Rovers were trounced by those damn SJ 310 Suzukis. A Jiminy is a warmed over 310/410. Point being that these small, narrow lightweight 4wd with minimal overhangs are ideally suited to offroad work - they have no compromises at all and as such are absolute kidney ruiners on the road and I came near to rolling one once at moderate speeds round a roundabout...

So just what was the point of that magazine test? They could have put any 4wd up against that Jiminy and it would have lost out - even the current Range Rover.

It makes sense if you live somewhere with extremes of climate. In the summer in Chicago it often gets to 100+, right now it's -10. They get a lot of snow. Something like a 996 Turbo can't cope with the deep snow, a Cayenne can be fun in the summer and capable in the winter. And petrol is <25p a litre.

Simon - yep a Carrera 4 can't handle deep snow - last year, forging back thru the drifts to Rubystone Towers I came up behind another Jeep and in front of that a C4.

He'd got so far down the road but then beached it solid on the snow betwqen the ruts - we hitched both Jeeps up but couldn't pull him out - with proper off road tyres it would have been no problem, I'm sure.

He told us that he was OK as a friend with a 4wd was coming to tow him out...as we walked away I asked him what 4wd his friend had "An X5" he said...the next morning the C4 was still there, blocking the road

What 4x4s arent ugly...??

I quite like the looks of my current shape Grand Cherokee. The Volvo whatever-it's-called is not bad either and the Touareg is OK. Not that I'd say any of them are exactly good-looking next to something properly beautiful like a 250GTO or DB7!

Trouble with the Cayenne and X5 is forcing the family face onto a size/shape of vehicle it does not really suit.

I think the new Range rover is the Worst.
Its got w*nker written all over it.

Surely that says more about your narrow minded prejudices than the actual looks of the vehicle?

Ditto.
More or less what I was thinking, Range Rover looks OK better than the Cayenne, having said that I saw a Cayenne going on to the Mway the other day & I kinda know a guy with one (he's a loud mouth sod) & thought i'd see if was him, by the time we'd got round the slip road he was gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I was driving(ragging) an Astra 1.8 16v

Ditto Chris I think all the 4wds you name look good - the family face is what's ed the Cayenne up - with a more acceptable face, whatever little fuss would have been made about Porsche selling out would have died down very quickly...and the Tuareg proves the creation can look very acceptable

A question I've been wondering about is this. Today's Cayenne is styled to look like current Porsche's.

So, when the 997 comes out, will a facelift of the Cayenne follow to keep the family look? You'd have to figure yes. (Of course Porsche won't want to admit to this because it will kill sales near-term)

In which case will this make it better looking? Again, you've got to figure yes as they must have learnt a few lessons from the flack the looks have got this time around.

So will this mean current Cayenne's rapidly become the ugly pre-facelift models no-one wants, and suffer horrific depreciation???

Hopefully - Cayenne turbo for sub 30 grand in a couple of years, I'll have one! At that price I could live with the looks!

In my case, it says more about a particular person I know that's got one, rather than anything else.

In fact, I've always thought that anyone who suffers the depreciation of buying a new range rover must have a screw loose - but then of course, if they do buy one then good old rr build quality probably means they have plenty of screws loose.

If it didn't have "PORSCHE" emblazoned on the hood, people wouldn't be talking about them much. It would just be a "high priced Lexus" few could afford. Sooner or later this infatuation with a high priced lead sled is going to wear off. I hope they sell enough of them to keep the doors open at Porsche.
