4Car interesting rumours about eight cylinder in top end 997, but flat eight rather than Cayenne's V8:

Don't really like the recent 997 pics (in case anyone's interested in my opinion ). Looks to me like a stretched VW Beetle (how design goes full circle!).
To be honest, the 996 with it's headlights covered to look a bit 993ish (with those aftermarket template thingys) looks a lot better than the 997.
Just MHO, which people of taste will no doubt agree with.

I wish I took notes as it was nice chat with a head guy from Porsche GB (deveolpment director I think)at an offical opening of the Burgess Hill dealership last week. - very smart do. anyone else here go?
I also asked about a tv in the sat nav system (as a BMW I had had one and was the best part of the car) but he had been trying to get Porsche (Germany) to put it in as there is a demand for uk customers but Germany refuse to do so.

They have been building 997s for ages, most cars are produced for up to 2 years before final release, to sort out all the production details and specs.
When I was touring the Porsche Factory last year, we were ushered away from the normal tour route and off the production line because a 'special' was coming through the line that we weren't allowed to see, that was almost certainly a pre-production 997.
Are porsche trying to move those that buy the 911 with practicality in mind over to their upcomin 4 door saloon? Removing the rear seats would surely do that to some extent. Its all rumoour anyway, the test mules might not have rear seats etc but that isnt a problem if the mule wasnt intended to test that feature.

Heard a rumour from the Silverstone OPC today that there will be no back seats in any 911
I'd ignore that speculation, sounds financial suicide to me.

Me too! But don`t forget those rumours about a full four-seater saloon (M5 beater) If they intend to offer that as an alternative in the model range, two folding bum rests in the rear of a 911 become less important!
The marketing logic being...Customer wants to carry more that one passenger frequently...They should plug the gap with another full four-seater!
Hey, they built the Cayenne for this reason!
The fact that you can get a couple of little seats around the configuration of a 911 is precisely the reason that it has managed to stay in production for 40 years.
I have read this a few times over the years by Porsche board members.
If they were to remove the rear seats in a 997 cabriolet the car would simply cease to exist in comparison as an expensive bloated boxster S.
