Hi Guys

A bit of advice please.. I have put a deposit down on a 95 993 from a dealer, trouble is I assumed I would have no problem getting an independent to go and check the car, no one will go and check the car and I would have to take it to the them. Nearest OPC is 50 miles and Northway are a good 60 miles away (no other independents nearer and cant imagine the dealer would be happy for me to take the car to either)!

AA have however quoted me £280, my question is as the dealer bought the car would he have done most of the checks that an independent or OPC would do anyway? The dealer is happy to put on 12 months warranty, I have checked the Service history with Porsche and it all matches up, the car has had a recall for the loom but not yet done, I realize this will have to be done and understand this is FOC.

Although the car seems genuine I dont feel comfortable parting with my cash not having the car checked independently or am I being a bit paranoid.

Any advice??

Tarka

Have you looked at the 911 and Porsche World magazine? It has a lot of ads for independent checks, including one of their own staffers, who seems to know his Porsches well. No idea of the costs, I'm afraid, but you're buying peace of mind, here, and that's worth quite a wedge!

Good luck!

Mr DVD, I've always just done plenty of research including speak to the previous owner(s) and the companies who've serviced the car. It's pretty easy to clear the wheat from the Chaf this way.
I've recently purchased a 993TT and did exactly this. There's no way you can account for every possible eventuality but you can't do that with a new car either!

Good luck!

I don't think the AA would make my shortlist of Porsche experts to give their opinion on purchase ...

Stick to plan A - get your inspection unless you are 100% confident the warranty covers everything. BTW, the OPC one doesn't ....

Many thanks for the replies guys, I've decided to get an independent inspection and managed to get Steve Bull (Independent in Devizes) to go and look at the car this week, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed its a good'un...

Excellent choice. Steve did the PPI on my 964 and the problems he identified (nothing major) enabled me to knock over £700 from an already discounted price.

When you see Steve tell him Andy ((black 964) sends his regards.

PS I can also recommend him for servicing and free advice.

As mentioned previously, 911 and Porscheworld carry out inspections. The guys name is Peter Morgan. He inspected my 3.2 Carerra last year after the lady buying my car insisted on an inspection.

He has written books on a variety of Porsche models and I would certainly recommend him though I don't know what he charges or how far he will travel.
