Quick question for Porsche owning Ph'ers re audio options.

After looking at several 993's I walked away from all of them being disappointed at their condition and how they drove. All felt unloved and out of life. Heart lost to head this time and I walked away. So I concluded that my budget was very tight for a good 993.

I then looked at a couple of Boxster S's and drove ones on both 17" and 18" wheels. I came away mightily impressed with the little machine. Lovely induction howl above 4000rpm, a good spread of torque and simply superb progressive handling. When pressing on in the Elise I awlays felt on the knife edge of grip/no grip. The Boxster S seemed much more communcative and the break away more progressive. Overall a fantastic motor and it's gone and ticked every box for me.

The long and short of it is I have gone and bought a 2000 S manual from James and Jonathon at Cridfords. It's being prepped at the moment to be ready for me in a week or so.

My audio question is quite simple, the previous owner did not have the CD changer in the front boot fitted, just having a one slot CD player in the dash. I'm sure the wiring for the autochanger is already in place in the front boot. However the downside is an OPC want the best part of £500 for the autochanger which seems pretty excessive to me.

1. Who makes the Porsche CD changers? Is it Blaupunkt?
2. It looks a simple job of simply connecting up the wires already in place and fixing the autochanger in place, so how can the price be nearly £500? Is this a case of the box being made to a special size just for Porsche so nothing else will easily fit and hence you get raped on price?
3. If so, any idea of where I can get a genuine item at less than an OPC arm and a leg price.

Whilst I'll be listening to the flat 6 most of the time I do fancy having the convienience of the autochanger for long journeys etc.

Cheers

Chris

P.S. A big thumbs up for the independents. Cridfords treated me well, no preaching just enthusiasm and they got a good sale straight way. I chased a couple of OPC's a few times but gave up after a total lack of response from them.

Oh, and if you're after something really special Cridfords have a 964 C4 taken out to 3.8 litres and supercharged...by none other than Ninemeister. Apparently a beast of a machine but very much a Sunday / trackday toy at the moment due to the suspension set up. Looked in lovely condition too.

I think they are made by Becker. My 996 has a Porsche/Becker unit with 6 cd auto changer.

You can pick up a secondhand unit on ebay at a good price.

Enjoy your new toy

The Porsche CDC-3 changer is identical to the Becker 2660 - except the Becker unit does not have the Porsche name on it. In the US we would buy the Becker unit because it was a fraction of the price charged by Porsche.

Problem is the 2660 was discontinued last year (at least in the US) so we cannot find new units. It was replaced by the Becker 7860 - which is a smaller unit so it is not a direct fit on the factory mounting bracket. Jeff

The Becker units are ridiculously expensive due to the fact they use optical cables instead of a bus line.

Not much use since you won't get the benefit of optical links in a car which has only got separates in the front as standard.

ETA: this is the changer TP is talking about.

Don't know if it's compatable with an earlier CR-11 head unit or not but it's cheaper than buying from the $tealers.
