Hi guys,
Just been surfing the net trying to find stuff out on my cayenne and came across this site.

I sold my boxster S to get a cayenne. I was planning on getting something bigger but have always loved roadsters. I foolishly ordered a BMW Z4 (cancelled it) and then ordered and X5 diesel (cancelled that too!). I had driven the cayenne S and turbos before and didn’t really think any more of it but I couldn’t be bothered with the excessive (and deliberate IMHO) waiting list for the X5 so looked again at the cayenne and again and again……I LOVE LOVE LOVE MY CAYENNE!

A few points I feel I have to make having read the comments on here so far:
1. No way no way no way is this car ugly – I know this is just an opinion like any other but the brochure does not do it justice – in the flesh from any angle (especially the side and back) it looks terrific. Colour and wheels play a big part in how it looks, mines titanium metallic with 19” cayenne design alloys and looks the dogs dangly bits! In any case, I spend more time looking at the inside of my car than the out and the interior is just amazing. I love it. Its quality stuff too – very well made and a great place to be in.
2. It’s a big of a gas guzzler but, hey noone’s perfect. Ive managed 26mpg on a motorway run tops and about 19 around town
3. It aint slow, but it aint no boxster or 911 either – then again is it meant to be? The 3.2v6 is good enough for me, for now.
4. I HAVE NEVER EVER DRIVEN A CAR WHICH HAS GOT SO MUCH ATTENTION! I drive into town and I get back and people are crowded around it. Im driving along minding my own business and you can see people turning back to have a look at it constantly. I park it up and when I get back people are stood staring at it..
5. Not one person (honestly) has said to me that they think its ugly! Not one!
6. I had to get a bigger car, deep down I didn’t want anything other than a porsche – anything else I felt would have been a step backwards. I happy – I love the car, I love the way it looks, I love the way it drives, I love all the gadgets and gizmos on it (its fully laden with options).
7. Some B****rd stole my bonnet badge last week!!!! (thought the Beastie boys were long gone…….)
8. I don’t for a minute think that its diluting the porsche brand – and if they every bring out a saloon car as good as the cayenne – I would seriously consider it.
9. I miss my boxster S dreadfully but for different reasons – so im going to work by nuts off and buy one again and keep the cayenne.

Just my opinion – lookd forward to your comments or questions.
Regards
Nick

Great to hear you enjoy it.

I think in terms of metal-for-the-money the Cayenne V6 is a bargain............

I keep thinking about getting one as the family car.

Is your V6 manual or auto? Also standard or air suspension?

Hi Nick

Congratulations on being an emotional Cayenne owner!

How does the V6 compare to the V8-S? I was looking at an S and just couldn`t justify the £55K.

Looked at the Tourag and thought that for just £5K more we could be in a Porsche again!

Gave up the idea and I am now quite interested your experiences with the V6.

Keep us posted!

I see a bit of a Cayenne revolution coming on.

Lots of people seem to say they're ugly just for the sake of it. They are the best drivers car out there for those who need a 4x4.

The look is really growing on me too so if i was in the market i'd definitely pick one up.

Hi guys, thanks for your comments.
My cayenne is pretty loaded with extras - i think the only thing it doesnt have is cruise control (the only thing i wish it did have....) I also looked at the Touareg, X5, and merc ML but they just didnt compare in my view. There has to be a bit of badge snobbery too....VW, BMW, Mercedes, PORSCHE!!!

I drove the Cayenne S and the turbo too. The turbo was amazing but out of my price range. Looking back now i should have gone for the cayenne S as the fuel consumption is (on paper anyway) close to the V6 but i opted to go for a fully loaded and spec'd car instead. Mine had £12K worth of extras on it and cost £48K in total.

The spec on mine is:
Tiptronic, Air suspension, Servotronic steering, CD Autochanger, PCM module with handset, entry and drive system, park assist, sunroof, heated seats and steering wheel, xenon lights, 19" cayenne design alloys, comfort pack, sport aluminium package, climate control and coloured wheel centres.

The car aint slow by any means but obviously needs to be worked a bit harder than the V8 but it suits me fine - its fast enough, handles brilliantly (air suspension a must!)you can still chuck it around corners and the comfort, sport and normal settings on the suspension are great to play with! The air suspention has a loading level too which is useful when you're washing the car so you can drop it right down and clean the roof!

There was one major factor which influenced my purchase: believe it or not the porsche was cheapest to buy out of all the other cars. Porsche's interest rate for the finance was less than 4% and the others were nearer 10%. This saved me over £8000 in interest over the term alone which had to be seriously considered. I was going to go diesel due to my job, but worked out with the mileage i do that i was going to spend about £600 a year more in fuel by going for petrol and that extra cost didnt seem much considering the X5 diesel was an extra £160 per month in repayments. So i did my sums and went with my heart as well as my head. Oh yeah! and first service in 20000 miles too!!!

Yesterday i was out at a restaurant and the car was parked outside. Whilst i was eating all i could see was people walking by, stopping, looking inside, standing and staring and having a debate with their mates! It was such a great feeling. I cannot ever remember anything ive seen or owned getting so much attention and looks. I was well chuffed! How can something that gets this much attention be ugly? Its not, but certain things improve its looks significantly - xenons, bigger wheels and colour all play a part!

What dont i like?
the entry and drive system is a cool idea but i noticed the other day that the car was parked on the drive, the keys inside the house and you could open the tailgate - minor thing but my car was parked close to my front door.
PCM module is great and a must for me, makes the inside look good too but is fiddly to use when your driving - you gotta be careful with that!
Fuel consumption: fills up on about £65 and i get about 400 miles/tank depending on the journey! not fantastic compared to the boxster and waht ive been used to, but frankly, i dont care - the car gives too much pleasure in compensation.

Nick we've pretty much done the Cayenne thing to death on here, ability wise not many of us argue that the Turbo goes like a flipping missile & S still goes pretty well & both handle very well for 4x4s, but many have issues with the looks & others with brand devaluation & image etc.

The V6 being quick however many of us would refute, I mean that v6 is ripped out of the Golf R32 which again is derived from the VR6 in my older Golf, which is now pumping out 200bhp & I don't feel its a quick car, yet the Cayenne has a mere 45 or so more bhp yet another 1000KG!! so fast is not really a description I feel is appropriate, im suprised it even moves under its own power

Personally I couldnt give a monkeys ref brand devaluation & all that, I just think the cayenne is so ugly that it hurts my eyes to look at it, I can't think of another Porsche ever that Ive thought that about.

Ive thought hard about it & really its the ride height & wheels that make them look so woeful.

Because when its lowered down to normal levels & with different wheels & looking more like a conventional estate car, they look so much better, a bit of plastic further lowering the car visually also helps.

The Elephant Man sitting on the pavement would have generated a similar level of interest.

I'm afraid the fact that you mention the Porsche badge and that you like how much attention it gets just confirms my suspicions about most Cayenne buyers. However, if you are happy with it then that's all that matters, really.

I didn't want to be the one to say that...

Anyway, glad you like it Nick, honestly. But I think there's a lot of people in this forum who would much rather Porsche had built a genuine M5 rival, instead of a me-too school run special.

Hi steve
Would be happy to do a comparison with a cayenne s at some point - have driven one before.

Was chatting to a mate last night, (porsche purist through and through who also bought my boxster S after he wrote off his 968) and he was of the opinion that there are many die hard porsche fans out there mainly loving 911's who objected to the boxster when it came out as they though it wasn't a proper porsche. I suppose many objected to the boxster having a similar nose to the 911 etc etc.

Just opinions at the end of the day - if we ourselves are happy with our motors thats all that matters. Ive never thought of anything as being "the best car"

Personally i think the cayenne is better than the x5 - and here's hoping the cayenne doesnt adopt the bling bling type image of the x5!

Like i said, not one person has said anything bad about it yet (to my face) and friends, neighbours, customers etc all love it.

errr too late for that mate!

Anyway - FWIW I think that a base V6 probably makes sense as an alternative to the X5 and the ilk - much beyond that and I'd start thinking about buying a 3200 GT and just taking the snowy days off work as holiday.

Iguana sums it all up pretty well though - the Cayenne does indeed look much more handsome when lowered...but this kinda defeats it's stated raison d'etre doesn't it?

I can see Iguana pulling up to a VW meet in a white one though, 15 years down the line...

Hi,

I have a 996 C4S and the wife has a Lexus RX300 SE. I just got my 996 3 weeks ago and mentioned to the OPC that we were going on a short break with the baby in Scotland.

As the Sales Mgr seen the RX he asked if we would like the v6 Cayenne for a few days to try as we have previously bought 2 porkers from the group.

My summary:
I like the shape - wife hated it
We both liked the handling
Impressive growl compared to Lexus
Interior not as high quality as Lexus
Fuel consumption was 22 on motorway, 17 around town. Lexus we get 25 and 19 mpg respectively.
The instruments looked dated. I have white dials in 996.
Boot space was good
Lots of looks from public.

For the wife's use as around town baby carrier and occasional on road weekend away machine she prefers the Lexus.

I cannot justify the extra pennies to spec up a V6 to the equivalent fit. Wouldn't mind a turbo one though!!

Well.........you can call it your favorite mistake.

I'm one who thinks the Cayenne is fugly, but I'm a designer with 30 years of experience and two degrees, one in art and the other in architecture, having won design competitions and awards for design.

Personally, after seeing recent designs from Kia and Hundai, if you never saw a Cayenne before and one showed up sporting a Kia badge on the front, you and everyone else would say it's dreadful.

People would say "they tried to make it look like a Porsche, but something went terribly wrong". The proportions of the snout are pretty bad. It reminds me of a remora eel.

With all the care Porsche has given to graceful lines over the years, that superb top cabin of the 911 for instance, and the various beautiful fenders and body work over the years, looking at the Cayenne is well, disappointing. Yes, I know it's tough to style a truck and make it look graceful, and that's at the root of my feelings about the thing. It's a truck.

The Porsche crest spends some of that very hard earned credibility the company earned on the race tracks and by producing fine sporting automobiles, on a 5200-pound SUV. The competition in the US market, by the way, is so stiff, with new versions planned at Mercedes and BMW just to name two, that the Cayenne will either have to come down in price or come down in mechanical spec (such as the V6) in order to sell competitively, and then there will be much less expensive SUV's that will run away from this pig.

The important thing is, you're happy with your new ride. Be happy with it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there will be some, perhaps many who think the Cayenne is cute. After all, it has a shine and a Porsche badge, but don't plan on seeing on on display in the national museum of modern art any time soon.
