I was driving my Cayman S today (fortunately very close to my home) when I went to change from 3rd to 4th gear at relatively low speeds - say approx 30 mph - when the gear stick went all loose and floppy, like it wasn't connected to the gearbox. It appears to be stuck in 3rd gear and I cannot change it at all. I managed to limp it home but getting it off my drive will need a push since I cannot put it in reverse either.

The gear stick will move forwards and backwards without any resistance but it will not move left or right (to be clearer, its like I can move it between the 3rd and 4th positions but not into the 1st/2nd or 5th/6th).

Anyone experienced anything similar before or know what the cause or cure might be?

Plastic shift linkage? Fairly common fault I think?

Yes, I think planet 9 have a 'how to' somewhere on how to fix this - anyway...a good short shift replacement 'how-to' will tell you how to get at the gear linkage stuff - not that hard I think.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I've just taken a look at the shift linkage stuff after googling it. I hope that's all it is. maybe its a good time to upgrade it to a short shifter.

Your cayman was trying to tell you that as you'd dropped Miss Daisy off earlier you could stop driving like you were, er, driving Miss Daisy! 30mph, 4th gear, what is that about? biggrin

Ha Ha!

I wasn't really "driving" it, I was only on my way home from playing football. Fortunately it happened in 3rd gear so I was able to get home. I'd have been gutted if it had stuck in reverse!

Hi,

We have done a couple of Cayman's with that fault and always stuck in 3rd gear too ! We have found that one of the shifting cables have snapped and will not give you forward and reverse movement..... let us know.

I would upgrade to the 997 short shifter whilst at all of this as there would be no additional labour involved as centre console will be coming out anyway.

Thought I'd ressurect this thread - exactly the same has just happened to me. Same symptoms, stuck in 3rd etc...

I have the factory short shift kit already - I'll obviously do further research but is this a simple/home fix?

The cable can 'pop off' the ball at the gearbox end, so can be 'popped' back on but ususally needs a cable tie or similar to keep it there if it has worn (or a new cable of course)

It was due to go in for a service soon anyway - they're collecting it at the weekend. AED150 (23 quid) for the collection! That's very reasonable considering they'll pull my pants down on everything else hehe

Its a common issue - happened to my Cayman S last month - new cables sorted it out. I was lucky to be stuck in 2nd so managed to drive it slowly to my local indy.

This had happened to me on my 997.1. But I think from memory is was in 1st. I just pulled over and called Porsche assistance. Like a moron forgot to get them to fit the shorts shifter at the same time..
