996 Exhaust

I have a '99 996 C2 Cab with standard exhausts.

I am not sure that I can run to the £2k approx cost to fit the full switchable sports exhaust, but want to improve the sound and get larger tailpipes. Can anyone advise me whether changing just the tailpipes will affect the exhaust note? additionally does anyone have non-porsche exhausts that they can recommend?
