[quote=MacG]A friend of mine has a 2007 997 Turbo, and very nice it is too.

It was at a specialist for a scheduled service today and they have reported back that the car needs:

Near-side, off-side and centre radiators replacing due to stone damage;
One new replacement turbo due to a seized actuator; and
Investigation of a damp patch around the nearside A/C condensor.

Expected bill £5k. I assume this does not include a replacement condensor as no specific fault has been confirmed.

Porsche goodwill unlikely if serviced outside OPC but might be worth a crack

I renew warranty every two years and have avoided big bills. I think you have to keep a 997t in warranty if you can as its more complicated than other Porsche models hence much more to go wrong. Think I've had 4-5 rads under warranty over 4 years 42k miles hence very normal.

It is painful parting £2k for a warranty and £180 for 111 point check every two years but i suspect far less painful than running one of these without a warranty.

Little chance of a goodwill claim if its outside network.

I had my centre radiator exchanged under extended warranty on my 997tt at 10k miles. It was not a stone chip but a cracked hose that was the problem.

Downgrading to backstreet garages? nono I see it as an upgrade (generally speaking). I'd rather see ten stamps from someone like S&C/Hartech than an OPC anyday (unless you're guaranteed Pope working on your car at reduced OPC labour rates).
There are many like you, but I think the general population buying into a prestige car expect to see a wadge of receipts from the main dealer -- ideally the same one indicating a proper relationship. At 10+ years old, maybe things are different but for a 997 for me it'd have to be OPC all the way.

Even my 996 will be going straight back to Cambridge in April for the 4th year maintaining the 100% OPC history, I feel a consecutive OPC service and sale history helps not least when something goes wrong requiring goodwill.

I guess that depends on whether you want your car properly serviced by someone who works on GT cars day in and day out, or whether you want a book full of lovely OPC stamps come resale time.
Possibly for the uninitiated those expensive to gain OPC stamps will have some credibility, for most on here I'd guess they'd rather see stamps from the likes of Fearnsport, Jaz, Parr, Mike @ S & C, Tech 9, Redline etc, I know I would !

As for relying upon goodwill on a nine ? year old car such as yours, I think I'd rather save on servicing costs by using one of the above independants and set up a contingency fund for if and when something goes drastically wrong (especially with the no non-standard parts clause being so rigorously enforced by Porsche GB these days)

I think once your car has reached five years old the benefits of OPC servicing become marginal (if indeed they exist at all . . . . . )

the rads get stone damage and start leaking, then it's curtains. I'd definitely recommend getting mesh fitted over them - doesn't look obtrusive, and saves the cost and annoyance of getting them replaced regularly. Not necessarily expensive either.

not seen mesh on a 997 t. Ironically if I installed mesh which would be sensible if possible it would probably invalidate warranty. go figure!?
