I think if the Cayenne means that Porsche continue as an independant sports car producer then good.
And why not a sporty SUV? after all some of their racing pedigree comes from that field so there is a logic there
Only drawback is they had to build it with VW because of development cost but you know what. I actually see more cayennes than VW Touareg.
So the selling success proves Porsche were right to go for it and long may it continue with the Boxster and 911

That's the only problem i have with the car. That it's a VW in drag. If it keeps them in the money to such an extent that they can carry on building 911s and more then it's a good thing.

I agree with Dazren... its a fabulous car.
It's imposing, handles well for such a beasty and is fast.
I've seen some footage of it around the Nurburgring and its very impressive. Faster than a Boxster S around the ring too!
AND it means that they will continue to pump out GT2s and Turbos for us trackaholics whilst keeping the wives happy with the Cayennes!

Well ive got one, a V6 and i love it. Fuel consumption aint brilliant but it depends how you drive the thing. I got nearly 25mpg from cheltenham to birmingham and back again doing between 70 and 80 and was quite surprised!

It seems rather irrelevant how fast it is, but it certainly sets new standards in pointless vulgarity. Maybe it might come to replace the ubiquitous Range Rover in any self-respecting rapper's garage. Maybe it won't. Maybe it will allow Porsche AG to shift more units in the US. Maybe it will dilute the brand so that other models sell less. No-one can really say at this stage.
I hate SUV's but am in Awe of the Cayenne both in NA and Turbo form I think its great that Porsche show the world that it is possible to make a 4WD off roader that is talented off road yet can also mix it up with highly regarded sports cars. I read in one of the Porsche mags that the Cayenne Turbo is faster round the ring than an E46 M3 how true that is I dont know but its still amazing that it can even come close.
Also lets not forget Porsche have made everything from Tractors to mining winches.

"Trackahilic" sounds like an expensive and serious addiction,,,only an intermediate myself but I have a few booked this year.
I will keep an eye out for you, always good to learn from serious track day guys like Melv. which Porsche do you track?

CS I fear Rico is some way beyond your mere intermediate level, I belive as a confirmed & serious "trackahollic" he has a pair of GT3Rs, one in Paragon racing livery, the other in Harlow motorsports livery & whats more he is running them both on slicks too!!

Apparently carpet fluff in the electrical conectors can cause a bit of a problem, how are you getting round that Rico?? still beats the normal moaning about GT3 brakes eh

Ah well there you go, a dealer with high morals clearly voting with his his feet to try and keep the pure sports car alive, he`s swapped to, errr...... Audi !!
I suspect his departure from selling the other prancing horse has more to do with Porsche AG internal politics and them wanting to control / own the dealers themselves (as per Mercedes), than the introduction of the Cayenne.

On a similar point, 'bout time we swapped that pic of the Beetle, old chum. Badly parked and in the pissing rain. I'll get onto the Boss and get it sorted.
PS - I've said it before - I'll say it again. That 993 shape / front end is utterly timeless. What a lovely looking car.
