Anything with an RS or GT designation will hold classic status. If you had asked the same question 15 years ago, how many would have listed the 930? A lot, believe me, but nowadays very few would vote for it.
Show non Porsche owners a silhouette of all the models and the only one that will be identified as a Porsche is the whaletail Carerra. It is the icon of the 80s and subsequent models will be either unrecognised or increasingly identified as Hyundae Coupes, a mazda?, etc.
I have a 3.2 so maybe I'm biased (moi?) and I like the classic shape of the older 911 and 912s and was torn between the Carerra and the 964 but blandness doesn't make a classic. It's not about performance or handling its about perceived image.

Tough call on classic status. 993RS prices are certainly rising, but then again so are 964RS prices, don't however, ever see either of them rising to Sultan of Bruni'ic prices of a '73 RS tho.
Boggo 993 should always be worth more than a 964 simply due to the latters reputation & the formers cheaper servicing costs.
Ref future classics-
Porker phylosopy will always work thus- & I have rough translated from the ancient Germanic scripts here.
Any water carried by ze automobiles of the pork variety must be placed forward of the cabin, however those vehicles that use water for uses other than cleaning of the vind-screen will be worth tuppence in years to come despite their superior balance & reluctance to throw you into a hedge backwards characteristics of ze air koolen relitives.
Zis may apply less to ze GT3RS coz it is und top dog wazzen pumpen tracken dayen bitch, despite ze gayboy sidestripe decals vich look a bit like un camp ss logo.
It then goes on about invading Poland at 0600 hrs or somat.

I think so, having spent a year and half reading about 911s before buying a 993tt.
The 993:
- represents the end of the air-cooled era - the purists 911;
- is simply gorgeous to look at;
- is the last model built using "old", labour intensive production techniques (they put some lurve in there man!);
- was designed by a team given a brief to capitalise on all the knowledge previously amassed in air-cooled, engine in the ass, nazi slot cars whilst management concentrated on preparing for "modern" car production;
- represents the pinnacle of air-cooled 911 development.
Personally I think it all went downhill from '98 on, though I recognise that the company may not have survived without making the water-cooled, increased model range transition. I mean they make lorries now for pities sake and sell lots of them!

Ah yes, one of the all time great quotes about cars, this time by PJ O'Rourke. He called 911s "ass engined Nazi slot cars".

I just test drove a 993 Turbo and have decided to hand over full-wheel-barrow amounts of cash for it.
I'll echo what's already on this board, the 993 is the pinnacle, it has minimal Turbo lag and will pull in high gear low down, it's predessors didn't. It has reasonably good fuel economy and goes like stink! Scary!
It's look are pure poetry and balance, and I know of a few affluent 996/Turbo owners who have actually TRADED back to 993s!
