Hi All,
Is anyone running a full decat system with a semi sleeved silencer?
To begin with, I had no silencer and all cats in place and then had the precats removed. After a taraka upgrade and mbe installation I felt the Griff needed a bit more noise so I had Clive's decat y fitted. (Lovely looking piece!). So now I had a straight through system.
What I loved was the INCREDIBLE noise under load at higher revs and the gorgeous sound on the overrun with the accompanying pops and bangs. More like a gt40 race car than a road car!! However, I found it far too loud at idle and if using too much throttle at lower revs it sounded too harsh for my liking.
Still have the decat y in place but now with an original silencer. I now find it just a little too quiet at idle and want a little more noise and theatre at higher revs when gunning it.
I'm planning to semi sleeve the perforated pipes in the silencer by clamping solid pipe over some of it and leave the wadding in place. Does this sound like a good idea and anybody know how much to sleeve to strike the right balance?
I realise this all sounds a bit anal but just trying to get the sound bang on. Any help is much appreciated!

Mine's std exhaust - was quiet with precats and the main cat, then virtually no change with ACT manifolds. Putting Clive's Y on made a big difference. I've heard fully sleeved cars and it's all a bit tugboat at idle - semi sleeved could be the next step up
Have a look on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tvr+s... - Bound to be a few.

Thanks for that. I've looked at many YouTube videos but can't work out what sounds best and there's very few that are decat with semi sleeved exhausts.
I'm not keen on cherry bombs so just going to have to try sleeving half the silencer and hope it strikes the right balance! Fingers crossed!

My griff has the act manifolds and removable cats with a tiny sports silencer on the rear just before the outlet. If I use the straight through pipes it sounds like a world war 2 spitfire on tick over. Put the sports cats on and it just takes the harshness away and makes it legal on mot emissions tests
Also no headaches when driving with the roof down due to carbon monoxide poisoning with the sports cats fitted either.......always a bonus lol

Personally I find the sleeved sound a bit agricultural at low revs and a bit harsh overall. The best sounding exhaust (IMHO) for tone is the ACT Cherry Bomb system. Sounds nice and deep at tick over and when trundling along, but really comes in to it's own when you power it up.
I have it with the ACT system and the de-cat pipes in place on my Pre-Cat.
If you google ACT TVR Griffith, you will see a video of mine at idle and drive by around 10 years ago when I fitted it.
It does sound different on each car though, compared to my friend's supercharged Chim 450 it is still louder and has more crackle.

I've watched that one many times, sounds lovely
Heard a Griff with cherry bombs in the flesh before though, wasn't keen on the sound. As has been previously said, each car sounds slightly different and maybe the 4L sounds quite different to the 5L with the cherry bombs fitted.
Hopefully the semi sleeved silencer will give me enough noise and drama at higher revs and not sound agricultural at lower revs. Now I have the mbe fitted the idle is super smooth, even when exhaust was straight through it didn't sound agricultural at tickover, just very, very loud!!

Interesting about what you say about the sports cats Robxjcoupe. I thought you could only get them in the manifolds. Didn't know you could get removable ones at the silencer end.
My car doesn't half stink sometimes, especially when you put the foot down. Fumes can be very strong with the window down even just a few inches. This is despite installing the mod that forces fresh air through the holes underneath the car into the boot rather than sucking in fumes from the exhaust. Still to try relining the boot though.
Where did you get the cats?

Hi - I'm not a newbie ('pjac67' on here) although the AmoreAutos is my (with my business partner) new TVR business.
I have been trying to get just the right note from my exhaust for the last 6/7 years and I am now please with the end result having gone through many permutations although.
I agree with previous comments that a completely sleeved/straight thru does sound fantastic over 3k revs but is very agricultural on tick over (although I did have some fun with it for a couple of years
My car has ACT decat manifolds with Clive Y and twin cherry bombs with electronic bypass valve (after the Y but before the sump) meaning YOU can here your lovely noise more rather than the person following ! Ideally this would be a full side exit although my car is too low but you still get message when its open...
A similar topic has been discussed on the Griff forum before with a pic of the bypass in operation:

Thanks for the pic, I see what you mean regarding the removable cats. If I don't get the sound I like from semi-sleeving then those manifolds or the bypass valve would be the next step. Will be added to the end of a long list of things I want to do to the Griff!
The act manifolds are a nice bit of kit, more so with the ability to run with or without the cat. With the two cats bolted in you still get a good sound but less crackle and pop as the cat works as a silencer too but you can park up in the garage and not gas yourself. It's quite amazing the difference in exhaust fumes and can understand why manufacturers were forced to fit them to help air pollution back in the early nineties Gassing Station | Griffith | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
