Tuscan - cutting out
Discussion
Hi All. Took my tuscan out for an hour's drive yesterday. All great until pulling into my driveway, the car cut out. Started again ok. Parked up.
Today, got 1/4 mile down the road cut out. Started drove 100 yards, cut out again. Limped home, car cutting out twice more.
Any ideas what could be causing this. Car has been well maintained.

Is it a mk2? If so and it seems to be running fine otherwise then check the connection of the key shutoff switch on the central console. The back of the key switch is a push fit and can come loose and cut all power completely.
If not then get the diagnostics plugged in and take it for a drive round the block and see if it faults again?

Have you checked the state of your fuel pump wiring?
They were just strapped to the chassis leg by the diff. Mine were basically wires of rust, with rust lumps for terminals.
New pump is around £60, came with caps to cover the terminals, and easy to fit.
Also worth replacing any bad wiring too.

Hi Phil,
Mine did exactly the same 2 weeks ago.
It was the fuel pump relay, the big black one on the fuse board.
The problem with an intermittent fault is you never really know if you have fixed it unless it happens again or not.
To satisfy my suspicion of the relay I cut it open and had a look inside. There it was, a dry joint on the PCB inside. These relays run hot and eventually it causes them to die.
I got a new relay off eBay, £9.99, it's a Vauxhall Carlton/Senator one.
Exact same thing happened with the fuel pump relay on my 1988 911 (DME relay).
Pete.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
I gave the fuse pump relay a tap on sunday morning and drove a few miles with no issues. Will order a new one and swap over and hopefully no more cutting out.
Used my 1988 wedge 350i over the weekend for our regular breakfast and lunch tvrcc meets instead of the tuscan.

lots of suggestions here! ive had similar problems with mine for quite some time. originally started happening a long time ago when the battery ran flat and I had some alarm problems, but dont know if thats related.
sometimes it will start up straight away again, sometimes it takes a good few minutes which is pretty disconcerting when in the middle of London traffic.
Ive had the electrics all checked out by a highly recommended garage, have had teh immobiliser replaced, but unfortunately, although occurring less often, it did gain the last time I took it out.
Will have a look at some of the suggestions here as my next port of call...

I had exactly this several years ago. Started with a single incidence of the car cutting out approahing a roundabout then no other problems all trip. Then, again, a week later. Finally (while down in Le Mans) several week further on it started cutting out on multiple occasions, culminating with 10-15 times per trip. The mobile RAC chap short-circuited the fuel pump with an override wire and fuse hanging out the side of the steering column, which got me home (after burning through several fuses) but it eventually turned out to be the starter relay.

how did you diagnose which relay was at fault? ive had mine looked at by garages and alarm specialists, have replaced items on advice, but am still suffering the same problem. ive ordered a replacement fuel pump relay, but any advice on diagnostics much appreciated.Gassing Station | Tuscan | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
