is it possible to direct replace the manual struts with gas ones? I believe my car came with Alan's conversion and I'd like to put gas on, but what struts are they?
I bought a kit, including the gas struts. Where the different types of struts fit on the body is obviously different, not sure about on the bonnet itself, so some holes to fill if changed. Probably best to contact Allan for details and also to supply the correct struts.

I've been seriously considering this for a year or so. But what really puts me off is this...

Looking down on the bonnet and it's lovely curves, you see these big steel rivits in the shut lines.
In reality they are hardly visible.

If anything the boot struts show up more than the bonnet ones do

Does anyone know which struts to use?

I had the bonnet conversion done when the car was painted but for some reason the guy never fitted the struts for me, i think he didn't know which ones to use and as such its never been done. iirc i got the hinges from someone on here, but can't remember who.

I dont mind if they are hydraulic, gas or indeed just a rod.

When I did my bonnet conversion - with hinges from Mr.Chips on here - I went with gas struts from SGS Engineering.
However, latterly I was finding that on a motorway run in Europe, I was having difficulty in getting the service bonnet to stay closed onto the ball/socket closures on the edges. I deduced that this was primarily due to me mounting the gas struts at the front of the engine bay, and in order to have enough 'grunt' in the strut to keep a darn large grp moulding open AND with a small lever (bonnet end of gas strut was about 450mm from hinge), the pressure (exacerbated by engine and ambient heat) was slightly deforming the bonnet such that it was pushing on the underside of the service bonnet causing it to pop off the ball posts.

My revised bonnet 'stays' were telescoping ally tubes and a nylon moulded thumbscrew clamp which work well imho.
I got the tubing and clamps from https://www.metals4u.co.uk/aluminium/c1/telescopic... I had a mate who turned me up some end caps for the tubes to take M6 ball fixings and got the ball fittings from SGS. I mounted these about 1/2 way along the bonnet length.
