Got my new car about 6 weeks ago. I use it every day and clocked 1000 miles in no time at all. I have just got it back from its first sevice. Never having owned a TVR before I will probably spend alot of time on this web site asking you TVR veterans lots on silly questions. My question today is that my engine sounds like the tappets are going mad. When standing at the front of the car its all you can hear. It gets better as the car warms up. I am sure when I test drove a Tuscan it did not sound like this. Is this because the engine is new. Anyone got any advive.

I think generally speaking that that is a 'feature' of the AJP6 lump. The Tamora boys were saying that they sounds tappetty when cold and that goes away once the car is warm so I would say little to worry about.

I dont think its the same engine as the Tamora. I managed to get one of the last 4lts before they changed them to 3.6

By all accounts the 3.6 and the 4.0 ARE the same engine.

While they may not be the same engine (3.6 against 4.0) they are the same design and yes they do sound noisey when cold - the S engines are even noisier than the 4.0 engines!

The thing to be on the look out for is noises when warm and any new/different noises

My Tuscan sounds like a tractor when cold and a sowing machine when hot!

Sewing Machine?
Odd. What sort of satanic sewing machines do you have in mind? Mine sounds like putting your head in the bass bin at a motorhead concert but it is tappety when cold i will grant you.

In the last two years, my car has felt and sounded different just about everytime I get into it - just get on and drive it! - if something is clearly very unusual, get it checked of course, but if its gonna go, its gonna go and can be fixed. Do not spoil your enjoyment with too much worrying. I cannot imagine that anyone can have more pleasure from a car that I have had from X14TVR. Ive had tappety clatter, sewing machines, knitting machines and I'm sure there was even a spinning jenny in there once! - not to mention a rattling Nancy, but sadly no Jennifer Lopez
