Good to see there is so much genuine interest in this. Tony (other half)back in office tomorrow so will start talking to some of his many shipping contacts. Will post when we have some definite concrete costings. Anyone any idea on numbers as I've lost the plot a bit? Maybe chance of discounted rates on insurance etc for multi booking

I'm definately getting more interested the more research I do.

It might help in the publicity hunt that my baby's one of the Swordfish Tuscans - maybe we need a quest to go and meet John Travolta or something to add media interest

Alf Essex said: As I said on earlier post I might be interested but just a little worried about the car being damaged in transport over there...!

Have to say we could create some awesome publicity for TVR by going over and sure won't be short of friends if we got there

Whats the likelihood of getting access to one of their tracks while we are there I wonder!!

Alan.

I can help with this one, my old boss is Pres for the US Viper club

yes it needs a Holy Grail that is certain - just to go there, have a root beer and drive home is pants!

It needs something like your suggestion - even if you don't find the bloke!

keep the ideas coming in - stops required to see the 'Largest Set of Teeth in the World' and the birthplace of Chief Purple Reflex of the Tuuscon Tribe would also be good

We need some idea of the numbers of people who are willing and able, this will help negotiations in shipping costs.

Also i am certain we could selll this for TV.

Selling it for TV doesn't quite work out that way anymore, there aren't endless programmes with endless budgets anymore - example that I think you quoted: 'Men and Motors'
they shoot most of their stories for about 2k!!!

watch this space though !

I'm interested but until we have an idea of costs i don't think anybody will sign up - costs, proposed dates, a schedule or itinerary would be handy.
Best that everybody just pitches in with ideas at the start, then you can see how many are truly interested

sorry..but it needs a bit more fettling!

It will cost a lot. The container shipping and insurance costs are at least three-fold to what it would cost to fly over and have a vacation with just a rental car. Plus you will be without your car for a month beforehand and at least two weeks afterwards (while it's on the ship).

You can try defraying some of the costs with some kind of TV/film angle but do you really want an annoying boom mike and gaffer following you around?

One way of making it affordable would be to have three parties share each car. Each party flies in, has their vacation and drives the car(s) on a different leg, then hands the car over to the next set of designated drivers. But now each car owner has to be trust at least two other sets of drivers...

Tony's initial toe in the water findings. Spoke to a Company which specialises in auto shipping to the Staes. They recommend West Coast, Oxnard 60 miles north of LAX Port Huenene. Ship every 10 days, 26 day transit. They sepcialise in Mercs & Audi's ect.

Now worst bit: prices. Based on this years ratesthe transit cost would be £745 ew plus US handling fee dockside of US$85 per car.

Ins:- Tony would recommend hunting around as for normal marine ins all risks incl scratches etc, he has been qtd 1.5% (i.e. car value). As cars in US for less than 6mths they would classed as tourist, so no additional costs and no emmission -noise probs. Cars would have to be in S'hampton 8-9 days prior to sailing. Although vessel would be a RORO, there are NO vehicles on deck. This Company specialises in auto transit so assured us all would be ok.

Does sound expensive, but this is just a prelim. enquiry - may be able to do better.

As this could be a big event I am sure some of us could maybe raise sponsership or thru the TVRCC mtgs hold fund raising events. Remember we would be promoting the marque and England. The yanks love us at moment so we will try and do some networking with contacts in the States. Anyone who knows any US Companies etc - get working on them, think of the Kudos for them to sponser 'outrageous English cars'.

As it was my orig idea and thread, I am going to be cheeky and take the liberty of naming this event 'Operation American Thunder'. Keep your ideas and suggestions coming and lets make it a reality. p.s. would be good to see a variety of TIV's represented.

Gentlemen and ladies start yor engines - yeeeee haaaa!! pps. wonder if Blackpool might be persuaded to dip into their pockets hmmmm.

Anyone interested get working!!! Without wanting to sound heavy handed, please only post if you're genuinely keen. Don't want to make provision for 10 if 5 drop out. email direct if you like. New thread statinbg on general TVR gassing called Operation American Thunder.

This thread continues on the TVR General Stuff and Gossip Forum here www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=37746&f=13&h=0

Apologies for closing this one but it becomes a little confusing otherwise. I will post a cross reference on the other thread!
