I pulled into a petrol station this weekend and there was a fella cleaning a 911 Turbo S. We got chatting, general petrol head type stuff about our cars etc and the subject got round to Dancing Donkeys. I said to him I fancy a F355 Spyder next and he said avoid like the plague! He had a brand new one, the engine sounded like a bag of nails after about 1000 miles as they go out of tune so quick, the door dropped on the drivers side and literally dropped off on the passenger side. They leak, generally badly built and not worth the money unless you can afford two.

It put me right off. TVR arent the best build quality in the world but its expected as they are hand built (although thats not an excuse). Also given that far more exotic motors seem to have the same issues then I have to say I'm with TVR for life!

Matt.

Minor, yes, however I have spoken to three people recently...each knows a Tuscan owner. Each owner as given up and either sold the car or given it back to the dealer. This may be because they are not "TVR types", but word of mouth counts for a lot - it put me off...

I agree with that though... that's why I bought a Tamora. All the second hand Tuscans I looked at had rattly engines and poor build quality. IMO, they had such a waiting list for the Tuscan they just slung them together. I don't think they are all crap though, there must be some good ones out there?????

Indeed there are good ones out there !

I took delivery of mine new Aug 26th 2001. Superb it is too. No problems except minor, and swiftly resolved, heater control fault in 4,000 mls. The engine uses no oil, nothing has fallen off, nothing looks or sounds like it might fall off and it puts a big grin on my face whenever I use it. Having sold my 2001 M5 to get my hands on the Tuscan, the M5 being an exceptionally well built car, I am not in the least dissappointed with the Tuscan.

I'm gonna ask Porsche to build Flasher a car that looks and sounds like a TVR, just to get him to own one.

More feasible than Peter Wheelerdealer getting TiV build up to Porker levels ;-)))

Not im my expierence. Mine never went "out of tune" and nothing fell off.
I think if you're trying to convince yourself that TVRs are just as well built as a Ferrari or Porsche then you're onto a looser.

Having said that my Tuscan is just as much fun as the F355 and cost less than half!

You pays your money and takes your choice.

Excellent, but get them to build it in Blackpool with British workers and then I'll consider it.

The only "foriegn or "non- British" sportscar I would consider is a Ferrari. Not sure about running costs though and I do a fair bit of mileage in my TVR's and I don't think a Ferrari would like that.......

Oh Flasher, how disappointing it is to read this from one of the most TVR-biased Pistonhead...

Please throw away the remains of naive little boy dreams and don't forget that no ferrari will ever have the appeal of any TVR.

Sorry thom!!!

I doubt that I will ever own one, because TVR have always done enough to keep me buying in Blackpool (or Melton Mowbray ) Let's hope they keep up the good work or I'll drift towards a prancing horse one day......

For what it's worth, I saw a Diablo on the back of an AA truck a couple of days ago.

My Tuscan (a Sep 2000) has certainly not been as bulletproof as my previous Griff. It's been back to B'pool twice for (warrantied) engine rebuilds. The other faults - roof seal, heater control unit etc - should have been sorted by a dealer as they are well know.

On the other hand - I took the realistic view that if you buy a new model TVR in its first year of life, you're going to be a beta tester. Not ideal, but then the company doesn't have £300m to spend on testing etc. Porsche has had 30 years to iron out the bugs (and individuality) from the 911.

I've just gone back through my EVO mags and worked out what David Yu has spent on the F355 since he aquired it in Jan 2001......

How much do you reckon????..........

£18,032..... yes £18,032 in one year, running a Ferrari F355. By my calculations he's done about 14,000 miles in it, in that time making it about £1.30 a mile.

F**k me!! you could have bought a Griffith with what that bloke has spent!!!

A letter to EVO with a few well chosen words is in order I think!

Unfortunately, my Tuscan was the car that finally ended my love affair with TVR after 4 new ones in 9 years. What i couldn't understand was that the same silly faults were happening all through the cars that I had owned and finally it wore me down. I was truly gutted when I woke up one morning and realised I didn't have that edgy excitement to drive my car any more and was just looking at it thinking... if only. This is gonna sound silly but if I had an engine problem with the Cerb or Tuscan I really didn't mind 'cos I thought it was an amazing achievement for TVR to have built their own engines, but for s sake how difficult can it be to source a glue (and put enough on) that sticks trim properly, or a reliable door lock, starter motor, and earth things properly etc. I really really hope they get it right with the Tamora because it seems to have everything else going for it.

I bought my Tuscan new in march 2001, other than the fuse for the windscreen wipers blowing every time it rained its fine.I had it "repaired" three times , on the fourth occasion I fixed the problem myself , with a soldering iron and a stable hand(thats a non shaking hand, not a bloke who looks after horses). Other than that and a minor altercation with a drunken tw@t ,it has been superb. I did have it up for sale following a moment of sanity(looking at my overdraft), but withdrew it from sale after a quick spin the day after I decided it had to go.--
