Lynn: The accountants say that since you've definitely not got a second series at the BBC you're going to have to sack everyone at Pear Tree Productions and close the office down; otherwise they're going to declare you bankrupt on Friday.

Alan: Right, Still, good news about the chocolate oranges.

Lynn: Now, Alan, you're going to have to trade down your Rover 800 for a smaller car.

Alan: Go on.

Lynn: Well, Alan, if you want a Rover 200 you're going to have to sack everyone at Pear Tree Productions.

Seems like a pretty big sacrifice... let your business go down the pan all for the sake of a Rover 200

That is very very impressive, 150mph?! In a Rover 800? thumbup

I would love to have been there on the day, I take it looking at reg on the car this was done sometime in '89/'90?

I had one of the old 820 turbos (pre-facelift) in the late '90s. Very fast car, but it used huge amounts of oil, and eventually the head cracked on a run down to London. For £250, I'd be tempted to buy one again, provided it had a long MoT & tax; but it'd be off to the scrapper come MoT time. They truly are sheds.

Great machines, mine cost me £100 with Tax and Ticket.

Last MoT it needed a new rear box (supplied and fitted by Setyres for £10 more than I could buy one from a local motor factors even with my trade discount!

4 tyres, which I got off ebay from a Mitsi GTO complete with the GTO alloys for £50.

Only fault is it leaks Like a sieve and where it lived in a car park for 3 months the inside smells proper musty! laugh

Can't even be bothered to sell it as it's worth so little and handy to have a spare car when it's needed.

These are great cars, my Dads had Rover 820's for years, only replaced the last one with a MG ZT-T. He's still got the old one a Mint '98 R' Vitesse Turbo in the best colour of all that they came in - Carribean Blue, and it's only got 58k on the clock. It'll be in the classified section soon!

awsome pound for pound cannot think of another car that offers bardge sized proportions, good motorway manors and the abiltyto go head to head with volvos down country lanes hehe

have owner both pre and post faceligh models and... if you can live with the shite electrics, and oil consumption .. they make an excellent runabout.

I'll be honest, I do actually like '90s Rovers. Especially the 600 & 800. The 220 Turbo Coupe was quite a significant car in itself as it was one of the first properly affordable cars (on sale in Britain at least) that did 150mph. Ten years earlier you'd have needed a 930 or a Turbo Esprit to do this. The 220 GTi was one of the first hot hatches with 200bhp, and I also like the Cabriolet a lot, although I can't really justify that paperbag

So, not a complete joke then. And what was Ford giving us at this time? The Escort Mk IV, Scorpio and Orion, and the Sierra's last twitchings. Ooh, thrilling...

Fundle my bundies, it’s kettle at last and that means a dead London on dribbly soft logs. I’ve seen it with my own Wallers just this lemon.

Well tooled Gary came spurting up the fundy looking for a tidy Driver Reg. Waving the gravy, told him he’d need to whistle on a pistol. Got on the Nellie to an old Ethel at spurting, grasped a fat nadger on the fart he was clisping. Run up it the basket at an onion over six briskets. The Gary nearly grips his biscuits. Slapped down the Aspel at five Rollins, lovely touch, smells firm, meet his mum at 17 weasels. I’m simply dying to see your new conservatory extension. Sturdy.

Two Grahams later, spikey nice pipe comes by looking for a hearty Tarby. Dig out the gristle, touch someone’s sister, find a crisp glisby at a grunting down the arse bulbs. Nail it to a sock, folded all the curtains, punched in the turtle for an Alsation over six Lyndhurst. Chucked in a pair of flip flops I’ve had piped to my lovehut since Grimsdale. This is completely unacceptable behaviour for someone who lives near Chichester. Minty.

I had a 820 Fastback Turbo Sport Lux from new in 95/96 - 6 spoke alloys were the giveaway that it was the 200 bhp sport version. Brilliant car with oodles of power though delivering it through the front wheels was always interesting. I still have the launch brochure which has some stunning images and I think that the lowered Sport Fastback was one of the most visually attractive cars of its time. I drove it 65k miles in 3 years and it never had a single fault apart from the tailgate knocking a bit over rough surfaces.

Although the 800's and 600's were pretty heavy, these engines were prety cheap and pretty powerful.

I had the later engine wound up to 250bhp and 280 lb/ft slotted into a sneaky, ordinary looking 214si 5 door.
JAKY would run sub 14 secs 1/4 miles and got to maximum speed (137mph with sprint gearing) in around 1/2 mile! In gear grunt was wonderful! Fun track car!!

Anyway, watch the oil consumption, head and pistons. Don't over rev it, no need anyway. If you have the time, find a 200 and put the engine in it...

I think Motobuild still put these lumps into new shape 200's. Fun!!

Saab 9000 turbo. Barge of goodness. I'm well chuffed with my current £350's worth of Swedish steel. More torque than the Rover too...

I was hoping to go head-to-head on track with a Rover 825 in the Saab, but (no word of a lie) it died of HGF just after crossing the Severn bridge laugh

I must be mega-pedant though and point out that the Tony Pond record was set in a 2.7 V6 (Honda engine) engined car, not the Rover T16 turbo.

Coat got...
FEEL IT IS MY DUTY TO POINT OUT THAT THE 2.0 TURBO
accellerates quicker and has a higher top speed than the kv6 model and would no doubtedly be a little faster around the tt circuit (yes/no?)
Own one of these myself, and again i paid £250 for it
and all ive had to do is fit a new front subframe!
value for money is about 500%
