I seem to recall soothing words from PSA that jobs were not under immediate threat or similar, now this.

A necessary trimming of costs for a slightly off pace brand or a shafting for the 400 soon to be unemployed? Both perhaps.

To me Vaux have been on the slide for the last 10 years, and that wasn't from a very high point.

I guess they have to trim the fat to remain viable.

No consolation to those poor 400 who get the push mind. I've heard they are hoping to get most from voluntary redundancy so hopefully it won't hurt too many.

Hopefully it's the designers that carry the bulk of voluntary redundancies as they are just soooo drab looking (the cars)

As for PSA - the old saying 'a new broom sweeps cleanest' seems to be the case.

Vauxhall missed the shift from working class to middle class culture in the 1990s, and the shift from saloons to SUVs in the 2000s, with the end-result being marketshare losses and jobcuts in the 2010s.

Vauxhall now make some great cars, like the Astra, but nobody is listening. The snobs want German brands (despite being less reliable than Vauxhalls), while the penny-pinchers want Japanese or Korean with a million-year warranty (despite being bland plastic tat).

Sad to say, but the future looks bad for Vauxhall frown

Don't forget that EP is manufacturing Opel Astras for other markets too.

Officially it's as a result of a downturn in New car sales but hard to not see a connection with Tavares starting to cull numbers.

Sadly I see EP being closed within 4 years

sadly I think Ellesmere Port will go the same way as Ryton. Peugeot don't need the capacity and its a lot easier fro them to close capacity in the UK than France. Plus few people here care about buying British in the way that people in France care about buying French and Peugeot know that

emmmm... Vauxhalls are re-badged Opels, and Opel is a German brand, or it used to be.

That maybe true in reality, but the general public do not think of Vauxhall's as German made cars. Basically you drive a Vauxhall because it's a company car, not because you want one.
I suspect people think Vauxhalls are all made in the UK and the assembly line workers build cars like they did in the 1970's, and we all know how well that worked out.
I have little doubt Vauxhall will go to the wall in a few years!....sad, but make no mistake the French owners will want to eliminate the competition.
