There's a part of the gov website where you can check if a car is taxed or mot'ed so it's perfectly possible one of his neighbours has dobbed him in.
That's possible I suppose, but he lives on a farm, so unlikely for any busy-bodies to have investigated it. Not impossible though, as you suggest.

Shouldn't this be in the "My Friend Has..... thread?

No, it's not me. It is actually one of my friends. If it was me I'd have said so. There's no cause for embarrassment in a completely anonymous forum post as far as I'm concerned.
Well, in that case, why doesn't 'your friend' post it himself?

Because he doesn't use internet forums and I do. I deemed it a worthy subject for this forum, albeit one at risk of attracting flippant responses, as seems to be customary on PistonHeads.

Two possibilities:

1. Its on a SORN

2. Its on a farm and can be used for travelling between two nearby pieces of land owned or leased by the farmer for farming.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-vehicle-tax

This includes tractors, agricultural engines and light agricultural vehicles used off-road. It also includes ‘limited use’ vehicles used for short journeys (not more than 1.5 kilometres) on the public road between land that’s occupied by the same person.

The DVLA should have given him a choice,

Tax the vehicle for 6mts Minimum,

or,

pay the fine then tax the vehicle!!

If he's been using it, he should be paying for his tax and insurance etc. just the same as the rest of us.

And its not the DVLA trying it on, it's your so called mate!!

Interesting. Can't imagine they're doing it systematically as I'd imagine they would be caught out before long. But worth knowing if ever anyone experiences something similar.
