Hopefully not a repost yet but have just seen this

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-4477...

Anyone else think this is a terrible idea? I can't stand people using mobiles but..

1. The sign can't detect if it is the driver or passenger
2. Texting, whatsapp and other phone use wouldn't be detected
3. If you're using the bluetooth to stream music at the time you'll not be caught anyway

and most critically people who are looking down at their phones won't see the sign anyway!

I see too often people on their phones whilst driving... it really grinds my gears and have given people some words of advice at traffic lights/stopped traffic.

Think this will be good in the short term until people realise that the system does not issue any tickets or warning letters.

Reading the bbc article, it stats:
'When a signal is detected of a duration and signal strength sufficient to activate the system, the detector triggers the sign.
The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections which, when picked up, will prevent the trigger activation.'

Does this mean if a driver has bluetooth 'on' and is whatsapp /facebook, actively using their phone whilst driving, they will not be presented with the no mobile phone driving sign?!
With the recent, iphone update bluetooth is on all the time unless the user turns it off which it then turns back on some hours later.

From my understanding the bluetooth would need to be actively used e.g. transmitting or receiving but yes, you could be streaming music to your car or even on a call while using whatsapp and it would ignore you. It all just seems a bit pointless to me

Given that most people don't actually text in the old fashioned way anymore; text messages and conversations, now being made through Whatsapp or Facebook which are both internet based, then I can't see this working as it implies it picks up a phone signal.

If anything... it should be a normal static sign rather than this expensive fancy sign with all this technology.... meaning money can be saved and spent on... for example potholes and place more static signs around the country !

There is way too much unnecessary road signage as it is ....... we do not need more.

This one has all the signs of failure with all its limitations like not detecting texting or whatsapp chats not forgetting the possible backlash. Too many signs on the roads already.
