We tried all the options for powered travel 120 years ago, and settled on oil derivitives as it has the highest calorific value.
Have a google at lithium and copper mining, then tell me EV's are good.

Just set loose a pandemic that kills the old, and then invent a vaccine that makes youngsters sterile. Less people, less cars. Then stick everyone in high rise rabbit hutch apartments in cities, and feed them synthetic protein.

World saved. Your welcome.
Ill bite....

lithium and copper mining - you mine a ton and that ton is turned into something that can be used over and over and over again...

Oil you mine and turn it into petrol, fill a petrol tank and its suck squeeze inject bang and its gone.....

electric vehicles are the way formward...

Not forgetting that all plastic is made from oil. As well as all the metal is mined and melted/worked/formed using coal.
Un less I have that wrong.

First really hot week of the year in California they kept having to turn off the power because people had the nerve to turn on their air conditioning. If the government can't arrange enough power they are setting themselves up for failure if every single car needs a charge too. How's that going to work out when the entire state can't go to work because the sun doesn't shine at night?

And a double lol for the concept that EV's will stop forest fires. That is really drinking the Kool aid. Jesus wept.
Hydrogen will help here.

New Jersey is now following Californians lead.

And there's a push to take the ban nationwide. And if Biden wins, it will happen

I wonder, when the infrastructure for public charging points is discussed, how much shrugging of shoulders will be going on with the state governments, the federal government and the carmakers.

I love internal combustion. But it's pretty clear that places like LA need to do something, the air quality needs sorting out asap. EVs in places like that make lots of sense.

Also it seems to me that sunny places like California would be good places to have solar charged EVs?

LA area isn't anything like as bad now compared to what it used to be like in the pre-1970's era. It was still quite bad when I first went there in the early 80's, but there was a noticeable improvement by the mid 90's, and then again by the mid 00's.
By the mid 00's, it was much better than London air qual by some margin.

That's interesting, thanks. I haven't been, I just know that LA has/had bad air quality; I think a lot of the problem is the shape of the ground being a big dip and the emissions pool?

I think my point is broadly true for cities though? Emissions need to be reducing and EV is a good way to go?

For reference I am looking to get a Chimaera next year - I love cars but air quality is important.

I do believe that EVs will dominate in the future..but will be a long time before existing vehicles are banned. Yes, ultimately new car sales may well be restricted to EVs but the existing cars will not suddenly disappear , especially in the US. I fully expect to be dead long before the last ICE car makes its final run.

There will be more restrictions in cities for sure. more bike lanes and so on,but residents should get to own their cars in the city for quite a while. I have seven cars, no EV or hybrid, and will keep most of them. I want to have at least one manual car, some n/a cars, performance engines and the like. I know these pleasures will not go on forever, but then neither will I.

In the meantime, assuming we all get through this Covid nightmare, the open road will beckon and I am off down Route 66 to Arizona...maybe late Spring if the vaccine Gods smile on me.

You have got that wrong. I am from a foundry background in Scotland. The furnaces in the family business have been electric since the early 90s and the electricity is generated by hydro. You may well have a point, but it is not universal.

Steel manufacturing is still dependent on coal. Aluminium and others aren't.

I understand about 70% of steel production is coal based - which means (cos I am like dead clever) 30% is not.
It is a start...

You can recycle steel without coal. But to make new steel you need coal. Or there's an experimental process using hydrogen, but the excess energy required is somewhat astronomical.
