"let me be the first to offer my condolences to anyone affected by the attack in the USA, if you want a hand give us a shout" I'll echo that. A bit of banter is one thing but this is just appalling. I can't believe what I've just witnessed. Forget the thread it doesn't really matter anymore.......

I'll normally rip in to anyone horsey types, bad spellers, slow drivers, and americans no holds barred. However the images this afternoon are beyond belief I am stunned beyond words at the magnitude of destruction. I can alas do no more than offer my heart fealt condolences to all effected and to america as a nation. I for one would cast my vote firmly to stand alongside youselves in routing out the perpetrators. Good luck

I echo all that below, and this really puts the harmless banter in its place. Just to clarify - I am actually a brit living out here and my heart goes out to these folks. This has been one of the most harrowing days of my life so far. My office is quite close to the world trade center. I heard the first plane fly over our building & we legged it round to reception where we have a full view of the twin towers from our 8th floor. When we were watching the first tower burning up, we saw the next plane fly in and hit the second tower. Then the towers collapsed. Seeing a plane crash is one thing, but watching people jumping from the building is something that will never leave me I walked about 40 blocks north to get home (our building was evacuated) and it was like a scene from a bad disaster movie with people running in all directions, and folks crying and screaming on the pavements as they'd finally got their cellphones to work and found out that loved ones were dead. All in all - a day I'd like to forget but won't. Onto the next thread methinks Nick

Yesterdays events put a lot of things into perspective. I was going to say that no-one can fail to be moved by the plight of those affected - but what about the animals who perpetrated these sickening acts? Yesterday was a bad day for us all - we are all humans, and this is what we can do to each other. Makes you feel real good about your fellow man.

no animal would stoop so low, Tony Blair said something I agree with for once, "this is a new evil"

Apache Unfortunately it's not a new evil, it's just one that hasn't affected America or the west in general for years. I've worked in the City all my working life and have lived in fear of the IRA for most of that time. A murder is a murder, terrorism is terrorism. Whatever form it takes, it is evil and it's about time something was done to stop the hideous scum that do things like this. Like Nick, yesterday was one of the worst days of my life. I am just numb and sickened. My heart goes out to the victims.

Shocking news. I was so stunned yesterday that I couldn't post. My heart felt condolences to all our American friends. One of the most sickening pictures I saw were the people in the Middle East celebrating. How anyone can celebrate such an act is beyond me.

A friends work colleague got off the tube in west London to see people celebrating in the street. How come no one tells us about this?

Any celebration of terrorism is totally sickening, imagine for example, my horror a few years ago whilst on holiday with the kids in Florida when on St. Patricks day I saw people openly collecting for the IRA Yuk...

"a few years ago whilst on holiday with the kids in Florida when on St. Patricks day I saw people openly collecting for the IRA" This happened to me in 1993 in Florida also. I was sickened and appalled and had to be dragged away from the scum who were doing it. They had no understanding whatsoever of what they were collecting for. Imagine the same people coming to England to find us collecting for whoever committed this atrocity? I'm afraid to say that this particular incident in 1993 soured my view of American's and was partly behind my rantings in this thread. I hope those individuals now stop collecting for terrorists now that they have seen ,first hand, the kind of horror they help to wreak. The thought of anyone celebrating carnage of this nature is thankfully beyond my imagination completely.

Shouldn't get upset by that I had it happen just outside Covent Garden one night !!!! The plus point was I was out for the night with an old school friend who is now an officer in para's needless to say it all kicked off and got a bit messy. However we should all be very aware that these incidents happen from small minded individuals with little understanding of the true horrors. We mustn't let it detract from our sympathy and in fact empathy for the people now effected please don't let the actions of a few cloud your feelings for many thousands.

Mel Quite right and I'm not that narrow minded that I let that one incident affect my opinion. It also doesn't matter if I think many Americans can be a pain (and I've got many American friends!) I don't want to see ANYONE get killed. Yesterday was the worst thing I have ever witnessed. What a day to have half a day off, I watched the whole thing unravel before me, it was terrible. My point is that murder and terrorism in whatever guise is evil, and must be stopped. Maybe this horrific action will bring all the sane countries of this world together to crush ALL terrorism once and for all. I hope you or anyone else didn't get the wrong impression of what I was saying. There is good and bad in every country-ours included. And please don't think I don't sympathise with the Americans because I do wholeheartedly. I know what it is like to have a loved one murdered, I have been through it and wouldn't wish it on anyone. News reporter at Heathrow said people living in heathrow had offered rooms for those transatlantic flight passengers who are stuck..And that people were not complaining about the inconvenience at all, but were full of praise for the airport staff..Nice to hear The British People feel greatly aggrieved by this tragedy and I`m sure are willing to do all they can to help. I had the misfortune to be off work yesterday watching this all unfold live..

I still feel numb from all this. I was in a telephone conference with some guys from the US today and they said that it's been one hell of a wakeup call regarding security on internal flights, the guys there explained that most Americans seem to want the freedom of walking on a plane with no hassles from security. I guess this is what these B@st&ds homed into to their advantage. I've tried to put myself in their shoes, say if this happened in London. But it's almost impossible to imagine. Truely a day no one is going to forget.
