Top of the list for me is poor lane discipline...... on roundabouts !! I have to pull onto a bypass road at a two lane roundabout, my feed road is single lane, bypass road is single lane approach to my right, exit is dual to my left. People going straight across are in the outside approach lane, use inside on donut, then cut back to inside exit lane. Hence no-one can pull out safely from secondary feed road.

I don't care how multi-tasking you think you are - driving in busy areas requires concentration.

So does flying at twice the speed of sound in close proximity to your colleagues & the ground, at night while monitoring a multitude of instrumentation, atleast 4 different radio channels, radars, dozens of individual weapons systems, having your body compressed by your suit, G forces that make most people pass out, oh yes and having people shooting at you!

My point was that blanket laws and bans will always have adverse effects on the minority of people who have the capabilities to do what they do. Its exactly the same arguement that comes up time and time again about speed limits and what should be our right to decide what is "appropriate" You cannot brand people unsafe across the board because they are doing something that you personally are not capable of. As I said before I don't do it I don't have the skills to but some people can.

I'm damm sure that the kind of person described above can be trusted to drive on the M25 and use a mobile.

I agree with Mel. There needs to be an element of discretion in the application of the law, since the letter of the law must be targetted with the "lowest common denominator" in mind.

Unforunately, as the abuse of speed cameras has proved, we cannot trust the police to fairly exercise discretion.

It has to be mobile phone useage while driving, I can't tell you how much that winds me up. Working in Sloane Square I see all the Victoria Hervey wannabes driving around oblivious to what indicators are, turning into roads nearly running me over whilst talking about picking up their in-bred kids from their prep schools or the latest Blahnik shoes.

Where's the guillotine when you really need it?

Also lane discipline on motorways in this country has to be the worst in Europe.

On the subject of idiot drivers, I own a Lotus Elise. Can anyone tell me why drivers (normally young blokes in a Nova Sport or XR3i) try their hardest to intice me into a race on dual carriage ways?

This is the first 'high performance' car I've had and I didn't buy it so I could drive like a maniac all day.

Since having it for just over a year now I can't believe the amount of times I've been shown the finger or shouted at by these F#####S trying to get me angry

Oh and I agree about rear fog lights when it's not foggy!!!!! These cars are driven by the same people who do not understand what indicators are for! The asnwer to drivers with rear fog lights on is simple, drive behind with ya full beams on (only when there are no on coming cars, otherwise put them on dip) they soon realise why you have blinded them.....

Just some info for you chaps in GB about continental driving laws! Even the (very slow ) german beaurocrats have made using a mobile (hand-held) whilst driving illegal.
A voice-operated VOX is the only legal carphone here.
But white van man seems still to do it careering through our village at ilegal speeds (crashed into the next-door farmhouse the muppet!)
You lose all your insurance and thus are liable (as well as the fine for phoning) for a court case against you for driving whilst not insured. Switzerland, Sweden and Luxembourg also apply this. Hopefully more will join this.
Another one relevant to comments made here. It's illegal to smoke as a driver in a car in Sweden (in town)!!!!
What really p****d me off was that I was rammed by the typical muppet in Edinburgh in the summer while on business. Suzuki minijeep, with cow bars, blonde, loudmouth (swearing, SE-accented) female, smoking and using a handheld phone. Apparently she never saw me, with bright red car, 3 brake lights, and traffic moving at 5mph (only £500 damage to my motor)..........
rant over...

There is some logic in avoiding large puddles (as long as you don't drive into the car coming the other way!) in that you don't know what might be under the water - half a brick wouldn't do your wheels any good for example.

The thing that REALLY gets my goat is people driving with just one rear brake light working. The next time you're driving in traffic, just count them! It's even worse when you're on a bike like StevieGibson, as one tends only to look at one side of a vehicle when overtaking on a bike. If it's the side without the brake light, it can make for an interesting morning's commute (brushes with death are often useful ways to prepare for the day ahead).

Ahhhh Clean, wasn't a proper one then. I use a Cherokee as my kid carrying everyday car and I can't tell what colour it is at the moment. We have so many puddles / swamps on the road round our village I wouldn't get the TVR up the lane to the main road.

Ted has a good point though - flood water often hides bricks, potholes, ducks etc and the local Merc drivers don't like you splashing their car as you drive through the puddle.

However you should not cross the centre line if there is traffic coming the other way. Perhaps she had kids in the car and therefore couldn't concentrate on driving - are you sure it wasn't an X-Type ?

I'll second that, I had one hit me in the face years back. Open faced helmet on the trail bike.

My mum got the shock of her life when the lorry she was overtaking chucked a pot of cold tea, including teabags, out of the driver's window and straight onto her windscreen !!
