Ah - so you don't bother holding the wheel with both hands after changing gear? Have you ever tried avoiding a car/brick/person in front or controlling a skid with only one hand on the wheel? Auto or manual - two hands are meant to be on the wheel (check police definition of 'being in full control of motor vehicle'

>I consider myself a reasonable driver.... .. whilst going round a small round-about....I was putting on my seat belt

Putting seat belt on while moving? Ah, that definately makes you a reasonable and save driver then.

I came across a couple of blokes in an XR2 on the M11 a few months back. The road was emptyish yet they were traveling in the outside lane. I pulled out and sat behind them for a while and they didn't pull over despite the two inside lanes being empty. I flashed them. They stayed there. At this point I was getting ANGRY! Stupid ba$tards didn't seem at all fazed by me even when I undertook them. Stupid people make me do stupid things... and make me ANGRY

Similar on the M5 last weekend, Fiesta in the outside lane, doing approx 70, with nothing inside, and a queue behind it. Two cars undertook it, I came up behind, flashed lights, no response, so I undertook it too - something I hate doing. Another 5 cars or so followed on the inside... Blind, stupid, or what.

AAAARGH!

1) I hate this.
2) I hate it when I am undertaken because there's stuff in front of me I am waiting to get past and I have left a gap large enough to be safe.

Has anybody else noticed that more and more HGVs are overtaking in the third lane on motorways? What is the weight limit for the third lane anyway? Has anybody ever rung the "Do you like my driving / Am I driving correctly" numbers on the back of some HGVs to complain - or to say how polite and considerate they've been. Ha Ha!

I know that coaches aren't allowed in the third lane because of the restricted speed so I would assume that it the same for HGVs.

Don't know about any weight limit but surely anything that is restricted to less than 70 by law and/or devices shouldn't be in the third lane.

I know failing to indicate isn't in the same league as driving with your eyes shut - or being on the phone - but it is _the_ most irritating phenomena that I can imagine! I have visions of smashing up peoples indicators at roundabouts cos they don't use them anyway. Maybe an idea for a government advertising run? Not sure why it didn't make the list of top irritants.

Cirks - This was at an ungodly hour of the morning on a small estate with absolutely no traffic or people whilst crawling at a snails pace. It took around 2.5 seconds. I always way up the risks of ANY motoring decision before carrying it out and this was totally and utterly minimal. Not like bombing down a busy highstreet at mid day whilst on the phone. Are you trying to say you have never taken a hand off the wheel for ANY reason during your driving career? Because if you are then you are talking complete bowlox

oops - Lee, it was meant to be a friendly sarcastic comment! Being a true professional, I would never only take one hand off the wheel at a time - it takes skill and years of practice to take both off at the same time, control the phone, drinks carton and of course, break a piece off the kit-kat for my passenger ;-)
Obviously taking one hand off the wheel for a short period is one thing, only driving all the time with one hand on the wheel is another. The seat-belt comment was more a case of 'I don't fancy tidying up after your head goes through the windscreen!'.

Not filtering left is a disease that is called Outsidelaneitis

My favourite passtime when on an empty motorway is as follows: I'm in the left lane, someone is pootling along in the middle lane and the right lane is clear. I come up in the left lane, indicate right, slide over to the left lane, pass them and immediately indicate left and move back into the left lane. Mostly they don't get the hint.

Another annoying thing people do is, when they have done something wrong i.e. pull out on you, cut you up or something stupid. They give you a very dirty look as if its your fault. How does that work?

Don't usually stir the sh1t but my research on the M74 and M8 shows that around 90% the time it's dizzy bints that have the rear fog lights blinding me.

Why don't the info boards tell folk to switch em off.

Note to all: Regardless of the weather conditions if you can see the car behind you then they can see you ya thick ****???!!!?** so switch of the fog lights.

Ah, rant over.

Agree with your analysis of Lee's self-righteous comments. Can't see how he can consider having a seatbelt in the hand safer than a phone.

But controlling a skid one handed? You're having a laugh surely? If my auto with ESR ABS etc etc is in a skid then I could be a f***ing octopus with eight arms on the wheel for the amount of good it would do!

Its just as well the power assist makes the steering so light that one finger is all thats required to steer, otherwise I would have had to stop driving when I lost my arm.

Was anyone on the M5 last weekend when it was heaving it down (visibility zilch)? Notice how many drivers (polite) there were WITHOUT ANY LIGHTS.

I can't believe that you are dumb enough to totally miss the point! Self-righteous? I was merely commenting on the statement "you don't need your left hand", the inaccuracy of which was outlined by my negative experience of taking my hand off the wheel for only a couple of seconds. Do I condone my actions? No. Did I say I did? No.

Do I consider having a seatbelt in my hand safer than a phone? Now YOU mention it - Yes. Why? Because when all said and done, it takes a few seconds to push a connector into the socket and thats that. Done. However, when you are on the phone it takes much longer to complete a call than to click in a seat belt and all that time you are being constantly forced to consider what the person on the other end is saying and to think about your reply (not to mention searching for the phone and its 'answer' button whilst turning down the radio etc). All this detracts greatly from the driving process and I dare you to show your ignorance by disagreeing.

It's some kind of twisted justification for owning the Toyotal Landcruiser in SW London. [ Richmond Park can be very much like the Rockies on a cold morning......]

For me its got to be fleet car drivers. Especially BMW's as they seem to have a particular inpetitude in the way of the vehicular arts.

Now I realise that you have probably heard this before and I dont refer to all fleet car drivers but the ones who think saftey has a monetary value. The people who dont car about their cars and the way they drive because the company will pick up the tab.

I admit that in my younger days I did have a company car and didnt really take care of it but people who tailgate in Mundaneo diesel estates and rev their engines on entrances to roundabouts can just descend slowly into hell as far as I am concerned.

I find overtaking on dual carriageways whilst looking worried and pointing at their offside front wheel sometimes does the trick.
