Anyway back on the diesel thing a lot of people fall into the company car bracket with an "allowance" that is often fairly flexible i.e upto £25k type of thing. To a lot of people they don't really care how much "company money" they spend on a car (or on a fuel card) what matters is their tax bill on the P11D. I personally had always had 4x4's because it was easier to justify them as 100% company use and essential for access to some clients. However come April I will ditch the 4x4 and go "cheap and clean" and take the rest of my "allowance" for more toys that gratutiously burn hydro carbons and give Auatralians skin cancer.

I know a fair few Main Board Directors who previously had allowances that gave them the likes of 3&5 series BM's Mercs and Jags i.e. real x type terittory a massive amount of this type person now have good group A omissions cars on order because they just will not accept the massive tax bills to come and say bugger the status of the car. The car of choice has generally been the PD 130 or 150 Golf. My local VW garage laughed when I made my enquiry a week or so ago and said "maybe about May/June ish if you order now their all going to fleets and we haven't seen one yet"

I say instead of FWD or even as well as FWD I'd buy an X type if it was a Group A oil burner, fully loaded, 150Bhp +, and under 25K tomorrow.

Just on a passing note do you all realise that the Golf PD 150 has more torque than a Boxster !!!

I find that rear wheel steering the bike is one of the most satisfying experiences - even more so than playing with the wife's BMW. I'm sure Mel would agree with this one?

Sh1t Carl if you really perform the Doohan level of the art of real wheel steering on the road you are a demi god ! Personally I've found those rare moments of rear wheel steering on a bike closer to the heart stopping moments of rear wheel stepping out followed by sky / tarmac / sky / tarmac / grass / ugly marshal / ambulance. I've laid very few "darkies" and been able to carry on sorry the art fails me and gets left to super heros.

I was er... having breakfast

Regarding the bias towards rear wheel drive cars, I speak as the former owner of an Alfa 164. Lovely car, but a riculously big car to be pulling around by the front wheels. Could have been a much more of a landmark car if it was rear wheel drive...

No, not within a million miles of Doohan, but the art of controlling steering radius with more or less throttle, and getting good drive out of corner while laying down !! c'mon, you know what I mean?

Does not neccessarily have to leave rubber on tarmac, but can do sometimes! Actually in one very regrettable (and trouser browning inncidents) I got the silencer down on a roundabout. This lifted the back enough to cause scorched tarmac when it came back to earth. Lucky I stayed on.

Point being that RWD is FUN in cars, but IMHO even more fun on a bike.

Jeez, I never said or thought I was that good! sorry for any confusion here.

Bloody Ford, they haven't a clue about prestige, they could end up doing something that even BL couldn't do, kill Jaguar.

It will sell like hotcakes, most car buyers are not enthusiasts like us and couldn't care what end is driving even if they know. Is the Audi Image diluted by FWD or the Lexus image enhanced by RWD?

Yes Marki I can imagine Merc and BMW doing a front driver. Lets call the Merc A Series and the BMW Mini.

If we dont like it we wont buy it but I'm sure others will.

Ken, I think my worry is that unlike Audi/BMW/Lexus/Mercedes, Jaguar may be a little too fragile to do this without damaging their 'customary' market at the upper end of the spectrum. I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

The A Class may be a real Merc but IMO BMW 'stole' the Mini from Rover so it is definitely not a BMW.

Gnomesmith is right. These'll sell no problem.

All Ford are doing is bridging the gap that was left when the unlamented Scorpio curled up it's toes. Don't forget that Ford bought Jag at a time when they were struggling to screw the cars together. They've sorted the build quality, re-established the brand (not sure F1 does much to help though) and now they're expanding the range to fill the gaps and make the most of the plant they're building in - Hailwood - previously used to bang out many many sad Escorts.

You can be sure they know that the Diesel market is out there too. I could tell you what I know but then I'd have to shoot you.

My 2p'th RWD all the way. Only true Alfas are RWD.

Not so sure on this one Dave, I drive a Alfa 156 and what a fabulous car it is, also 2nd fun car is British fibreglass V8 engined RWD. Both cars are great in their own way.

I told my brother about this last night - he works for Land rover (ie Ford). His comments were 'it'll knock the market for V6 Mondeo's as all the the co. car drivers will want the Jag......Oooh I've got one of those - wonder if I can change it for a Jag'

And so go all other co. car drivers!
