Putting my Mr Cynical hat on, does this mean that NU will also monitor the way in which the car is used? i.e. 'We see you regularly exceed 70mph Mr Jones. We won't insure you any more.'

mmm... the technology will probably allow that. Companies like Minorplanet already do that with commercial fleets.

Don't suppose many TVR owners will go for it for the obvious reasons.

Of course they will. Wha tis most scary here, is that alot of people will probably go for this scheme as it'll save them *some* money. The insurance companies will make sure of that, but the flip side will be is that if you don't then they'll think you're trying to hide something ie. where you drive or the speed at which you drive at and you insurance will be sky high......

I think its a great idea, and would gladly volenteer. If you think insurance companies believe that you own a performance car and don't use the performance you are a little lacking in imagination !

sounds scary to me.
Will Insurance companies pass information to Police if requested?

Out in the middle of nowhere, the sort of places where you can safely do more than the NSL without offending anyone.. I have been known to give it some, as I am sure a lot of you have. So you think that being monitored at 150-170 WILL NOT affect your insurance?? ha ha ha.

I think if you exceeded the limit big stylee, you wouldn't be insurable, and then the next thing you know is a knock on the door from Plod. With computer printout.

If you smashed the car/bike up, do you really think they will pay up if you were exceeding the speed limit?

Big brother for real.

Water Meters were supposed to reduce costs, and look what happened with them?

I agree, Big Brother at its worse. Insurance companies try to find as many reasons as possible not to pay the full amount on a claim. This would just add more evidence.

I think it is a scam anyway, most specialist insurance is limited to a certain mileage so we are already paying for the amount of use. Will it be a case in the future that we won't be able to get insurance unless such a device is fitted? (stealth speed limiter)

It be exactly that. Or you could get insurance if you don't mind paying 6000 pa for it.

What happens if they keep a "tacho" style log of EVERY vehicle. Imagine;-

"OOH look, he's done 0-60 in 6 seconds again! better raise his premium"

The mind boggles. I am sure Metro drivers will get a very good deal, probably be paid to drive more. But anyone with some b*lls is gonna suffer.

It would inevitably be linked to the Police, or DVLA. You'd get a ticket in the post before you even got home. No need for Gatso's, any where, ever.

They wouldn't even bother insisting that you fit speed limiters. Absolutely no need - the faster you go, the more you show up on the tachograph. The bigger the fine, the more money in the treasury.

Thin end of wedge time. Fight it ! Help !! car drivers under attack. Again.

rgds.

Not only could the insurance co. provide data on speeding to plod, but they could plot your every motor movement. Screw that. Civil liberties are being erroded at every oppo by the Govt - Sorry, I mean European Union, the people who control our laws.
and there is no way I would appreciate some scrote sitting at his desk to be able to follow me everywhere at the touch of a button.

You could always remove the transponder when you go out for a spin - or put it in a lead box when you feel like a blast

Still, seems like too much big brother, and giving the insurance scrotes more excuses to cop out of paying up...

smeagol - ooops, good point. A minor flaw in an otherwise damn fine plan

But I don't have faith in the insurance companies ability to use the technology correctly. To paraphrase Jasper Carrot, these are the people who post you a form asking you what your name is and where you live

It says that the system uses "similar technology to that used by mobile phones" if that means it uses the networks rather then satellites(sp?) then what will happen if you go out of range and in tunnels?

The system would use a 'loosely-coupled' comms mechanism ie if the unit is unable to report back for any reason, it'll queue it's data locally for later delivery.

If the interference is coming from a tunnel, GPS readings at each end and some elementary Newtonian mechanics can be used to extrapolate the path thru the tunnel..

Whether all this turns out to be a big nightmare depends on how much kit is in these boxes.. if there is GPS, GSM comms and telemetry from the car it all adds up to a big large headache for those of us who like to ... ahem.... "determine our own pace".

I note with a sense of amusement that one of the selling points mentioned by the BBC for this is that it will benefit people who make short journeys...

Hmmm..

So does that mean we'll see lots of performance cars going into tunnels, going flat out and then stopping for a coffee before the exit to reduce their average speed?
Tunnels are great with a sports exhaust! Who knows where the longest road tunnel in the UK is?

Hatfield tunnel is pretty good. Mate on GSXR1100, 12 years ago took 11 seconds to clear it.

Isnt there a similar scheme in use in Ireland?
