Corroded chassis members repair questions
Discussion
After longer than I care to remember, and £'s I dont want to....I picked up the chassis from RT on Friday, and thanks to Tanguero and UKKID35 (with Mother C catering services), Saturday was another big day in the life of the refurb my cerb.
The way these guys apply knowledge and experience is way beyond my capabilities and I cannot thank them enough....enjoy your drinks guys!
As you can see from Pauls videos here, The Sequel, the body went on (TWICE!) absolutely lovely, dropped on, dropped in (almost dropped on Paul at one point too!), without any fuss at all.
As Peter hadn't had chance to use his king size pry bar, we decided to take it off again so he could get his money's worth....well....in reality RT had added an angle bracket to strengthen the top arm of the rear ARB, which wasnt there in pics of the strip down, so as the body was lowered to its final position, they fouled against the inner rear wheel arches. So something for anyone else doing to NOT add or make sure arent added for them. So we had to chop them out from the lovely lime-yellow chassis, but had to be done and thankfully in a place that isnt easily visible and hopefully protected again well enough, but something I'll keep an eye.
So, now the rebuild starts in earnest....little bit of fettling to bolt holes to come, but with a bit of luck, the respray will happening sooner than thought
Watch this space.....
Yes it really is that bright!!! And I love it!

Thought it might be time to update.....things have been slow since the body went back on....virtue of an empty bank account and worsening knees!
Decided to get the car to someone who knows what they're doing and who would get the job done quicker than my knees will allow....so she's down at APM (one or two of you may have seen her there apparently!). Next stage begins today with the car being moved to the paintshop for colour change respray, headlight conversion and a few other bits'n'pieces. Lots of shiny bits in boxes in Andy's workshop and an even bigger amount to come....but fingers crossed be back on the road for 2,000 miles of careful engine running in around Easter.
and after 2 years in various boxes, the engine comes together....

Can't wait to see it on the road again, would be great to go up to Chatsworth in a convoy.
Chatsworth? Bit further away this year isnt it?? April 13 would be a pretty tight deadline....but hoping for a road return around Easter....then some gentle running in...which will be great and painful at the same time! This turned up on Saturday.....just a shame most of it will hidden.

Sorry to hijack your thread (fantastic work by the way) but this seems to be the go to place for chassis advice...
At the weekend I discovered this
This is the leading edge of the outer most corner of my outrigger (Front passenger side)
There is a hole that I can get a screwdriver right inside! The rest of the chassic 'looks' ok.
Two questions:
As we are only a couple of months away from the season beginning I'm hoping for something to help get me through til Oct / Nov time whereby I can then tackle the problem through the winter. I really don't want to lift the body or replace outriggers just yet.
What should my next step be? Smack a load of waxoyl on it? Strip back that section and paint with POR 15?
MOT time is in July, in your experience would this be a fail?
Thanks
Lee

Yep 'tis a splitter. It does a pretty similar job to the angled aluminium one by all accounts....but looks nicer IMHO. Sourced from the Carbon Cerbie website guys...looks superb and a bloody good fit right off the bat too.djstevec said:

Please show me piccies when fitted. Dare I ask how much?Rochester TVR said:

Firstly I'm really no expert at all so any advice would be what I would do...which would be to get it to a trusted indy, Dan Taylor maybe as he's down that way, and get an assessment of the whole outrigger first, then make a decision. My thoughts would be for my protection in a crash and as you can see from mine...I'd have been in trouble!
My Cerb passed 2 MOT's with all it's issues, so I guess it depends how well it can be hidden, if you want to do that and how "sympathetic" the tester is to TVR's.

Do the outriggers offer any real protection over the side impact bars that are in the doors anyway?Firstly I'm really no expert at all so any advice would be what I would do...which would be to get it to a trusted indy, Dan Taylor maybe as he's down that way, and get an assessment of the whole outrigger first, then make a decision. I always thought people said outriggers are non structural and that's why corrosion on them shouldn't be a MOT failure.

I'd say the height of the outriggers means they would be utterly useless in a side impact whether they are brand new or made of swiss cheese. I always thought people said outriggers are non structural and that's why corrosion on them shouldn't be a MOT failure.
I think they form part of the MOT due to the seat belt mounts fixing on them, well in the Chimaera anyway.
Cut 'em out and save weight I say
