Driving in heavy rain...cant see much

Is this a common problem when driving in heavy rain, the windscreen steams up so much that you can hardly see through and you cant open the windows for obvious reasons!

Any ideas?

Both my "sporty cars" do this. The Supra has a button that uses the air con to resolve the misting. The other car seems to work with both the air con and the heater and it doesnt matter which direction you aim the flow, even directing it to the feet seems to clear it.

I just hate the days when that happens and its too hot to turn on heaters. Weather has become so peculiar over the last couple of years.

I think you can get some demisting sprays aswell but not sure of make or effectiveness.

You could always avoiding driving in the rain?

I guess this is where the air con really does come in useful. I guess you could try turning on both the hot & hold blowers! Maybe the hot feed to the screen will help clear it and the cold feed to your feet and head will stop you getting too warm.

Or maybe not!

Silly question but have you tried checking for leaks. I had a similar problem but it was casued by me turning on the hot air fan (trying to clear slight mist on screen) as this evaporated any water in the car and made it worse. Once the leak was found and plugged, no more problems.

Happened to me a few times too - I just put all the fans on full blast and it did the trick (eventually!).

Thanks for the ideas, I put the heater on full but the it didn't clear the mist, may have to look into the leakage theory!!!

You could also try RainX - there are two types, one for outside the windscreen and one for the inside. The one for the inside (can't remember it's exact name) stops misting...

Is the car garaged, I discovered mine as it only misted up when it had been left out when wet. Taking it into the wet didn't seem to create the same issue.

I've got a 540 which, being German, doesn't leak (but is very boring to drive). Hot air on the windscreen still causes fogging big-time. Its all to do with the damp air outside and saturated vapour pressure increasing with temperature. In other words, the higher the temperature the more fog. That's why its so dry in Antartica. Cold air (when you air-con is working!) does the trick.

You could always go "old Skool" (as I believe the youngsters refer to anything vaguely retro) and use a chamois pad! Very much in the british-sportscar tradition!

Just when you thought this was a standard problem - I find the vents keep the windscreen clear fine, even in torrential rain. Need the hot fan on a little when stationary/in traffic, once moving can turn the fan off as the air flow through the car is more than enough.

Suspect that you either have a leak now, or have had in the past and the car still needs thoroughly drying out.

Biggest problem I have is on the other side of the windscreen - the wipers just aren't up to the job.
