I drove the Speed6 and 4.2/4.5 Cerbera's before I went and bought a Speed 6 about 20 months ago.

I chose the Speed 6 as it was a lot more forgiving on the road than the V8's and less hardwork to drive(I imagine the V8's would be more fun on the track).

I had loads of problems to start with and the engine went at 16,500 miles.

I was very fed up with it, but must say, since it's come back from the engine rebuild it has been nearly faultless (I've done 4,000 miles now and only had a £79 bill for problems !).

So I reackon that buying a Speed Six AFTER it's had it's engine rebuild is probably a good thing. After so many engines have gone bang you'd hope that when TVR get them back now, they make sure they're not going to go pop again.

I'd be wary about the older models that haven't gone had a rebuild if I were you. (IMHO)

Bandit, you say to buy after a rebuild. But what do/would TVR do at a rebuild that they don't do first time round, or are you referring to earlier models?

Cammy,

Soz for not replying earlier... busy day !

To be quiet honest I don't know exactly what TVR would do when they got a Speed Six engine back for a rebuild.
They refused to let me see a run down on the work they did to mine (which I think was well out of order).

I think that ALL early Speed Six engines had either a design flaw or faulty componants in them and TVR know this.

(hopefully they'd sorted the problems by the time you bought your car... the engine had been out for two years when you got yours)

They must have had hundreds of engines shipped back to them by now and you would hope that they know what caused all these problems.

To save the possibility of the engine coming back again & again I reackon they'd cut their losses and fix / replace all the possible offending parts whilst the engine was in pieces.

The Speed Six engine is TVR's future, if they continue to be seen as having massive problems with it they're really going to be in trouble soon.

Of course this is just conjecture... they might just not give a damn and fix the engines, knowing that they'll be back again for something else in a few thousand miles.... (but I hope not)

Anyway, mines running even better than when I bought it, this leads me to beleive that they've fixed whatever problems there were (fingers crossed)!

NB It may be interesting to see how many peoples Speed Six engines have gone pop, how many times they've been back and how old they are.... it may indicate that TVR have finally sorted the problem or not (although obviously the newer cars won't have done much milage yet)

Just to cheer you TVR boys up, last year I knocked around in the worlds scruffiest Griff 500. This car used to belong to GT racer Andrew Davies and in his and my hands was thrashed and crashed around nearly every track in the land, when it was sold it had 70,000 miles on the clock and had never had any major work done. Last month I bought an 8 month old M5 with 15,000 miles and yup you guessed it, the engine has just let go(big time)!!!!Nice to see its not only the Blackpool boys get it wrong some times.

My 1999 Speed6 Cerbera went tappety-tappety-ting-ting-pop at around 8000 miles about 2 years ago and subsequently spent six weeks holidaying in Blackpool. When I got it back it was like a new car. I've covered 26500 miles in total now and never had any further engine related work - other than tune-ups/services - done since. Beware, shameless plug incoming....and once I get the Chubb inspired artwork of one of the local Yoofs undone it will be up for sale.

Wee Another Speed 6 story, I have had 3 engine rebuilds in 7 months, and the last one, touch wood, bunnies foot, chimney sweep etc...........has worked

The car is running like a dream, apart from the exhaust back box has gone now, but the engine has covered 6000 miles since the rebuild and is going in for a service on Monday, with nothing for me to moan about.

I BELIEVE THEY HAVE GOT IT SORTED, YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been looking into this as I am looking to buy a Tuscan in the next month or so and thought I may be better buying one that has had engine rebuilt. Seems the Tamoras are fairing reasonably well so maybe major problems are sorted.

Well fingers crossed i'll be the owner of a trouble free SP6 by next Tuesday.

What would you say an immaculate one owner 99T with A/C, 3/4 hide 23,000 miles is worth? Needs 2 new tyres and 24,000 mega service.

Is the SP6 engine ok in the Tuscan and Tamora?
Or have all the problems been sorted as there don't seem to be any issues on the other gassing lists?

If it's a dealer sale then negotiate the service into the price - if it's not a TVR dealer, still get the dealer to pay for the service AT A TVR DEALER - not themselves. It could prove costly if they find anything needs doing - best the selling dealer pays, even if it costs you 500 or so more on the price IMO.

I am no expert on Cerbera prices, but I think a private SP6 like that could be picked up for V low 20ks. Dealers charge a premium, but you get a warranty, nose respray etc usually.

All IMO.

If you look back on the Tuscan list there are one or two incidents reported.

I reackon about £24K private if they service it. £26K if from dealer + warranty.
Remember - 2 new tyres + geometry check will set you back best part of £300. A 24K service on a SP6 is around £1K... and thats if they don't find anything wrong with it!
