I would have stopped but I was in the outside lane
going a bit too quickly to stop anywhere near you.

I think so. You came past me and I caught up with you to hear what your car sounded like (sad I know).
Strangely I have never heard my car from the outside.

I was on my way to South Wales to visit my folks.
