This is what happened to the coolant tank

This is what I decided to do with the new tank

This is the tank in relation to the exhaust manifold

I was wrong when I said on a previous thread that the coolant tank is usually protected by the scuttle panel - it is not, only the battery is protected

I've have one go like that but on the top with the plastic gone hard and brittle, I had it happen on a motorbike once as well where the tank was not exposed to external heat really at all.

I think it is just an age thing but could be wrong.

What's the pressure relief set-up on the pretty one? Does it unceremoniously and uncontrollably dump from underneath like the VAG original, or have Radtec taken the opportunity to have a proper spigot so that it can be diverted away from the inner wing and chassis by attachment of a hose.

I am sure this is the cause of much of the upper chassis rail corrosion that occurs on the passenger side

I've always hated the design, because it took a while for me to resolve the overheating issues

I even tried attaching a hose to the original expansion tank, however it didn't work because it became overwhelmed, and simply flowed over the top of the tank

You have to lay the blame for that fair & square at the feet of VAG, perpetrators of some of the worst automobile design I see. I have never quite decided if it's because they're stupid, or sadistic.
