I've just bought an early 4.2 with 35k on the clock...well 37k now

The engine had a sump rebuild a few years ago as the old owner drove into a thing sticking out of the ground. Apart fomr that it is as it came out of the factory in 96.

Perhaps a good time to fit one of those Chevvy V8 LS1 thingys someone's been on about on another thread? I've been wondering why someone doesn't offer a conversion ...

It was me. Raven will do it for you. It was something they offered when they first stareted up. Don't know if anybody has taken them up on the offer though. There has to be a first

Getting back to the thread. Mine had 53,000 miles on it when I sold it, on the original engine (although it apparently needed new valve stem oil seals on one cylinder soon afterwards).

The guy who bought it ended up having the engine rebuilt, but that was because he found a persuasive mechanic. Apparently it went sort of like this:

"Your engine is burning a bit of oil. It needs new valve stem oil seals."
"Oh. Is that bad?"
"Not really. Mind you. While I've got it in bits, I might as well take the heads off to have a look. Just to be sure you see."
"Oh. Ok."
"Well. While I've got the heads off, I might as well take the whole engine to bits and rebuild it for you."
"Oh. Ok. How much will that be?"
"About £4k."

So, a £300 job turned into a 4 grand job in the space of about 5 minutes. Still, It's better to be safe....

The cars a 4.2 that needed valve stem seals and a set of rings for excessive oil consumption.

TVR did not do the rebuild cost approx £1600.

There was a Blue Cerbera 4.2 with magnolia (well the front wasn't blue it was pure fibre glass white with stone chips) that had 75,000 miles on it two years ago. It was a chap who spent alot of time in the Midlands and got his serviceing all done with Brooklands I believe

Anyone know who it was?

My engine rebuild wasnt quite for the reasons per James' email. That was my plan - ie once the engine was out get it rebuilt cos after 53K it must be worth doing.
BUT once it was drained of oil they found loads of metal and the heads, bearings, oil pump, oil pump housing, head aseemblies etc all needed replacing. Cost about £4.5 K or so to fix (plus the cost of a service and the diff to be sorted).
Not sure why this the damaged was caused. An old broken bit of oil pressure relief spring was stuck in place so giving the wrong oil pressure readings. So I thought I was driving round on an engine that was ok but needed a new valve seal soon but didnt realise that in fact the engine was damaged and I was driving around making it worse ie the oil pressure was high when it was actually low.
Think the problem was caused by an overheat - but thats just a guess.
So in summary the engine would have been good for many more miles but sadly didnt get a chance to prove it.
But the engine is now like new. And the car is going like a dream.
