I have fallen in love with a Cerberra today from a small trade dealer, i am planning on taking the plunge tommorrow, what are the key things i should be looking for so not to end up with an £18000 dud???

Ryann,

If you're spending this much money on a car its worth spending another £100 or so to take a TVR expert with you to look over the car.

I say TVR expert, as you the person will need experience of the cars (e.g. a guy from the AA probably wouldn't know what to look for).

There are plenty of independents out there who will come out and look the car over or you could approach a dealer to help you out.

A good history is important with a TVR - you need to make sure that it has been well maintained. Service history is essential, dealer history is probably preferable but if it the services have been done by a known independent TVR specialist you should be OK.

Main things that can go wrong:
Engine !
Clutch
Gearboxes
Starter motors.

Check the tyres for wear, a good new set will set you back £500-600.

Where abouts are you based? we could suggest a good independent for you.

Andy at APM Automotive is based down near Farnham
Jools at JooSpeed is up midlands way.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Oh yeah - Don't buy the first one you see, drive a few and you'll get a good feel for what is a good or bad car!

I traded my 97 Cerbera in for a new Tamora.. they only gave me 14,000 for it and then resold the car for 20,000 which included new 18 inch wheels.. make sure the car has got full TVR service history and make sure the car has had a very recent service and if the tyres are worn make them change them!Dealers will give you peanuts when trading your car in and then mark the same car with a much higher price tag! So before you by from a dealer check out some private ads out first, you might save youself a few thousand pounds which could be spent on insurance and running costs..
