Reading the posts on weird noises, I thought I would see if anyone has any ideas what the noise I am experiencing is. (97 4.2 Cerbie)

Symptoms are

Driving along normally, ie within speed limits! a “chaffing” noise from the nearside rear appears, getting faster as you speed up and still there when coasting in neutral. Pressing brake pedal makes no difference.

First thoughts were something wrapped around a halfshaft but on detailed inspection all looks fine.
Next thoughts were driveshaft gaiter clip loose – all ok

Car was going into V8Sports and classics for something so asked Noel to check out. It didn’t make the noise once in 3 days with him and he could find nothing wrong.
On way back from picking it up as I approached my street – the noise returned.

Back at home, up on stands, wheels off, disks off – all seems normal.

Put back together and off for a test – noise returns. Try pulling on handbrake when moving and noise disappears!

Noise less frequent now but still appears, handbrake trick doesn’t always work.

Any thoughts? I am not convinced it is the hanbrake drums and if it was the pads rattling the noise would disappear when brake pedal is pushed.
This leaves the UJ's ?

With regards to the handbrake trick it would be weird if it were the UJs...
If you have actually dismantled everything at the rear except these, then they might be worth a check.

There may be some play in the UJ's bearings.
When you pull the handbrake this play is "caught" between the action of the handbrake and the running gear...
Please let me know what you find if you dismantle the UJs
