driving along yesterday and noticed oil pressure droped to 2 psi, normally about 5 psi......stopped and restarted but still low pressure, bags of oil in the engine ....how reliable is the gauge anyone experienced similar scenario....dont want any bother with blown engine with spring around the corner

Yes it *could* be a gauge fault, but suppose it isn't, there may be something major wrong with the engine. There is no good way for the engine to suddenly lose oil pressure, and given the cost and inconvenience of a dead AJP engine I would assume the worst until proven otherwise. So I suggest you get the oil pressure checked before you drive anywhere.

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

On both of my cerbs i found the the ajp is very sensitive to oil level. My cerbs would both start to drop the pressure on the gauge as the oil level got near the minimum mark.

Might be worth checking the oil level before you panic, but bear in mind its cold out so pressure will start high and then drop down as temp increases.

by 2& 5 i think you mean 20psi and 50psi, check the manual but both are in range i believe.

I also assume you mean 20 & 50 instead of 2 & 5 (which would be terminal). While they both may be "in range", if it suddenly dropped from one to the other I would IMMEDIATELY stop the engine and get it recovered to a dealer- you need to know why. It could be something really simple like the oil pressure relief spring breaking - this generally only happens after high load/high revs. Or the gauge.

A new engine is a LOT more than a rebuilt one...

spot my deliberate mistake ,yes i did mean 20 and 50 psi, checked the oil again tonight and if anything theres too much in it....presumably there is no easy way of checking the oil gauge is working so its a car transporter job to the nearest tvr garage 30 miles away who i would not trust to service my lawn mower let alone my pride and joy.....i live in wales by the way so you can draw your own conclusions to where i mean......thanks for the reponses by the way....

If it always used to be around 50, and it's still suddenly around 20, I would really suspect the oil pressure relief valve spring breaking. This can break anywhere along it's length, which gives a different pressure. I would definitely call your dealer and ask them to check this first. If they've never heard of it, then get them to call the factory or some other dealer to ask about it - I've heard of another main dealer who claimed to know nothing about it even though it really is not that uncommon.

Good luck!
