well, after having all the fun of replacing the steering wheel ribbon to find that the little pcb at the top where all the buttons connect was actually bust!!!

the pcb had cracked and wasn't joining pin 1 ! anyhow..! soldered a bypass wire and all is well (pics and guide to follow soon)

so moving on..

where oh where is the indicator cancellation disc!? i take it its behind the place where the steering wheel fits into?

eg...

you have the wheel, this then goes into the hub where the ribbon cable goes through, then on the other side looking up under the dash i can see two micro switches etc, should the indicator cancellation disc be here? does anyone have a picture?

cheers!

You should find the cancellation disc on the main steering shaft, a little below where the shaft disappears under the main under dash cover. From memory about 18 inches from the steering wheel. Sorry I don't have a pic.

As you took the steering wheel off, what do you have between the wheel and the hub it clamps to.

I am trying to find out what stops the wires from the buttons being squashed as my wheel clamps straight on to the wires.

I also would appreciate any pictures advice on this as my indicators don't cancel either.

nothing im afraid, it looks to me that the wires go under the hub and get squashed! I was thinking about maybe making a very small grove for the wires to run through...

Right, i think i have sussed it all out. I just want some people to confirm smile

1) the main problem was that the wiper button would be intermittent. So i thought this was down to the ribbon cable, anyhow i replaced the ribbon cable and had the same problem.. so it lead to more investigation..

2) as you can see from the picture below the way this little ecu works is to take the steering wheel conectors through the hub and join onto the ribbon cable. After a long time and finding the wiring diagram i did a lot of electrical testing and found that for some reason that pin 2 on the button end had a break in the PCB going to ping 10 on the other end. For those wanting to know... Pin 5 is live, ping 4 - 1 is the functions

3) then it looked like you need to unsolder the board to actually get it out, and still no guarantee that it will fix the board (would need to resolder the circuit. So to fix this i soldered in a bypass wire, bascially doing the same job...

4) quickly re connected it all up, tested and all was good! result (now have a spare ribbon cable..)

5) the indicators wont self cancel so unless i am mistaken the pic below shows the indicator cancelation disc... someone can confirm?

now from the pic below you can see there are mounts, and this is where i expected to see the sensor. but there were none. then i suddenly dawned on me that the steering wheel ecu board (pic below) should be mounted here, with the black sensors on the bottom of the board reading the disc position...

mounts

my board was here

top of the board - as you can see indicators, hazard etc go in here

bottom, showing the sensors that should read the disk when the board is on the mount..

so it goes from steering buttons, to boss, to ribbon, to another ribbon to steering wheel ecu/indicator cancellation, to steering wheel ecu box (pic below)

had to come in at this point as the GF isn't amused about me being in the garage all hrs after work, but im guessing that if i mount the board above the column then all should be well! smile

hope this guide helps other people resolve there problems
