Hi my power steering pump on Cerbera V8 is on its way out. How difficult is it to change? Once the undertray is off is it easy to get to from under the car??? ANything that needs to be removed before you can get to the steering pump, i.e covers etc or other components?

It's an Engine out job to remove the pump. An alternative is to fit an Electric pump, the Citroen Saxo one works fine, has the same hose connections.
Are you sure the pump is on the way out. Check the fluid level and bleed the system first.

Seriously?????? There is no way to remove the pump with engine in situ. Fluid level is perfect. The problem i have as i'm driving down the motorway for example so over 60mph, small steering inputs does not change the direction of the car, from what i read, if the pump base line pressure reduces (not peak pressure i,e steering full lock mode) with wear and tear then it can give the above problems, plus when you move the steering fast the steering suffers from catch back, i.e fluid not flowing fast enough in the rack which means worn power steering pump. If i do go for the electric pump route what do i do with the existing pump leave the pipes disconnected? i guess the pump uses the power steering fluid as a lubricate so i guess that would be bad practice.

Looks like the two black allen bolts need removing from the power steering pump chassis. How is the pumpp shaft connected? is it pushed on or bolted on???

Actually Savroo - you could be right - my apologies for giving you and your wallet a heart attack. biggrin It's just that I'm sure people were using an electric pump because it was an Engine out job.

Take a look here on Page 15. Try bleeding the system first though, easy to do.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to confirm it one way or the other.

Excellent the manual to me confirms the shaft is not bolted on, seems like its only pushed into position. Looks fairly easy to be honest, i just hope theres room to get it done. I will probably do it over the Easter Holidays. Can anyone confirm out there if it can be done without engine out pls.

Oh i have already bleed the system its not air, i had stripped down the steering rack last year because there was some freeplay, which is now all fixed, and at the same time i did the bumpsteer mod, i'm certain the pumps base line pressure is low as its potentially worn out. I have been reading up on how power steering work and am certain the baseline pressure is currently too low. Baseline pressure is really important especially on a quick rack style steering which our TVR's have. If pressure drops then this effects steering response, more so on a quick rack than a normal rack.

Hi,

I've got a '97 Cerbera and the earlier ones like mine had an undersized woodruff key, so were prone to failure. When mine broke I replaced it with a Citroen Saxo pump which is still working fine. I removed the original one with the engine in situ, but I did need to unbolt the drivers side engine mount and then use a car jack to move the engine up and out of the way. It was'nt by much, but it was needed to get it out.

Can i ask you regarding the electric pump does this turn on straight away when the ignition is turned on. If the ignition is left on without firing up the engine, can this eletric pump flaten the battery quickly????

I'm 99% sure the pump is the same one used on the landrovers so may be worth checking before you get your leg lifted.

I've got mine controlled via a dash mounted switch that activates a heavy duty relay. Its now habit (pre-flight) to turn it off and on. You only forget to do it once. smile

On mine the pump was fine. With the genious of hindsight I probably should've replaced a 50p woodruff key instead of spending £200 on electric pump and associated gubbins, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. smile

Hi i just managed to change the steering pump today, to be honest its fairly easy, just abit fiddly to get to the bolts but it was easy.

I had a spare pump but off another complete different Vehicle (brand new)_, the housing just slightly different, so i swopped the internals over to the TVR unit, i also decided to change over the relief valve and orifice outlet (output side) seems like the replacement had a bigger hole to give more flow, this is something i was after to improve baseline pressure to improve steering feel at light inputs.

Boy is it so much better! Steering feel so much improved!!! I'm not sure if my old pump was worn or not, or if the outlet orifice hole made the difference its one or the other or both.

Before the steering would jolt when one wheel went over a bump, not now. Car feels much safer at Highway speeds to.

Mind me asking which different vehicle your new pump was for?

I'm not really sure had a spare pump lying around for a while. The orifice hole in the outlet could be drilled out on the tvr version but have no idea what would be the ideal size.

Can anyone tell me if the Cerbera 4.5v8 steering pump is identical to the one for the speed6, and/or Griffith/Chimaera? Thanks

Think I'll attempt to replace myself as just been quoted £900 due to the fact that from a garage perspective it's an engine out job. If I loosen the drivers side engine mount & gently jack up that side of the engine, is there much risk of damaging anything? Or am I better off paying for an engine out job to replace the pump & woodruff key?

Thanks chaps/esses

I don't think the issue is the pump itself, I believe it can be replaced in situ. I think the issue is the failed Woodruff key in the shaft that drives the pump, that is the engine out sump off job (and £900 would be good value for that work).

Hi SAV,

found your post about your Steering Pump problems and just wanted to ask a few things....

I want to replace the two pipes that go from the Oil Reservoir to the Pump.

I have been under the car for weeks but cannot find where they attach.

This pic shows a few ports and I wondered if they are what I should be trying to access ?

Can you tell me where the Pipes attach and what fittings they are please ?

If you have any pics that you took whist doing the work, I would be internally grateful laugh

Thanks for any help that you can give.

All the Best,

APJ
