Posts from 6 years ago saying these R8's were going for circa £65k and now they're holding at £45k.

£20k over 6 years is £280 per month in depreciation, not too bad at all.

Impossible question I appreciate but what are the prices set to look like in, say, another four years or so? Some of these cars will be 14 years old by that point, is there anything we have to compare it to?

Have they bottomed out now?

Edit - sorry for the necro, too.

I'd venture that they'd hit their bottom mark now - the V10s are 55/60k which is a bit of a bargain. Notwithstanding a global financial apocalypse (in which case we're all screwed anyway), I can see these remaining as they are for a year or two before they start to creep up.

I started reading this thread as I am looking into V10 R8's at the moment, took a while for me to realise the first posts were in 2011.... I think the V10 has a little bit to drop still, not much though, I have managed to own a Cayman at the bottom of the curve and sell it for what I bought it for 18 month and 15,000 miles later.... hoping to repeat the experience with an R8.... lets see!

Id love a v10 plus now having owned the v8 for a few months.

So my experience . Bought 2011 v10 Spyder Dec 13 , put 10k miles traded it this week for 18 month old RS6 and roughly lost £3-£4K over the period . Which is brilliant in my books.
Proper sad to see it go - really great car

That's good to know, cheers. I am in a bit of a funny position really, can I afford a 60k car? No, of course not. Can I facilitate owning a 60k car? Right now, yes, as long as it doesn't plummet by 20k in 3 years! I think its a fairly safe bet, I'm sure some people will think I am a bit of a loon though!

Exactly why I haven't jumped in and bought a new Alfa QF because my money is probably safer in my R8 and it's a bloody good car!

I might be in the market for a V10 in a year or so. Got my 997 GTS as we can put a baby seat in the back meaning it gets far more use than my old 981 Boxster GTS did, but with the arrival on mini-Mario149 mkII later this year all being well, the 997 won't be be able to take all 4 of us - not enough space behind my seat for another child seat I think frown

So if I'm going to go back to having a car that doesn't get used much and 997 GTSs hold their current money, a straight swap into a V10 might be tempting as a change from Stuttgart metal....

I followed values of R8's for a while before purchasing my 2010 V10 last September. I'm of the opinion that the early ones are very close to bottoming-out in relation to prices and could even enjoy a slight gain in the coming years. Incidently, I came out of a Cayman S into my R8 and whilst I loved the Porsche, the Audi is on another level.

Good to see there has been about 10 responses now and not one saying you can't shouldn't do it!

Trev, good to hear, essentially this has all coming from needing (not wanting) needing a V10 in my life, I suspect its a year away for me, so it gives a good while to watch the market, I think the R8 is top of the list, but also the biggest stretch financially. Also considered a AM Vantage V8, as I think they're in a similar position and always loved the Gran Turisimo too, all of which I think have price points where depreciation might not come into it.

Its time to stop dithering and develop a proper man maths spreadsheet.

Seems you can get one with 90k miles for £37k
And 50k for maybe £40k
and lower milage minters for £45k

This is pretty much how I remember it from when I was going to buy one 4.5 years ago

That's for the V8s rather than V10s no?

i was looking at buying in 2014 (as well as 430s) the bottom of the market seems to have stayed roughly the same in those 3 years - £40-45k for a v8, £60-65 for a v10... anything starting with a 3 or a 5 respectively quickly gets snapped up!

Yes take your time there are plenty of lovely ones out there, but some rats too.
You may find R8talk.com very helpful.
Good hunting.

i was wary given the cost of mag ride shock failure (£1k per corner) and ac failure (engine out) on the V8, but to be honest they are the only issues people mention, otherwise its a strong old bus.you can get shocks refurbished now at half price and fit yourself, and the windows still work if the ac didnt!
i got an immaculate very low mileage 2009 V8 for a very decent price privately, probably £5k less than a dealer would ask, and set aside that premium for any repairs i might encounter.

the only slight stinger for me coming from a classic air cooled 993 is the insurance needed a tracker (£200 subscription) and the road tax is twice as much, ie £560 pa, but i only do 6 months a year fun driving anyway.

Which is actually a very good approach, the guy who bought my Cayman did that, mine was probably slightly better and 2.5k under a dealer car he was looking at, but was in budget! A slush fund to fix the issues that are likely to crop up, then you know its good to go, with probably a bit more safe knowledge you're going to encounter any issues going forward.

I have heard about the Mag ride issues, definitely something to look for, or one without it!

My v8 is current for sale in the classifieds actually, its a cracking car smile
Dont think you will loose much money over the next few years as long as its a good car with the right history.

Definitely, I started looking at R8s in July and purchased in Jan. Was looking at the v8 but decided I could stretch to the v10 and it's an end of a era car (non turbo manual) so got one. Love it to bits, think 2nd gear is my favorite thing in the world. Prices seemed at their lowest during winter

£40k decent V8
£55k decent V10

Low mileage add £££ from there

V10 manual is a sure fire safe bet.

Name another n/a V10 manual mid engine super car
