Stu, you readjust your perception of speed - I went from a modded Supra TT (very quick) to a 993 Carrera 2 - at first the Carrera seemed painfully slow, over time I adjusted to it, and my perception gradually moved to it feeling like a rapid car again. When I switched to my 355 it felt like a big step up in performance, but again I have now got used to the speed, and couldn't honestly subjectively say now it feels any faster than I remember my 993 being......

Part of the reason I sold the Supra at the time, every time I did something to give it more power, that kick was very short lived, it started to feel 'normal' again and I wanted more... it was a never ending cycle.

Fair comment.

How do you find the 355. Is it a day to day car?

Stu, it is by far and away the most exciting car I have ever owned - and I have had quite a few - check my profile. Every time I get in it it is a immense sense of occasion. Usually I get bored with cars *very* quickly, the 355 just puts a grin on my face every time I go for a drive. Sure I know its not the fastest thing on the road, nor is it the best handling, but it just has that certain X factor - the combination of how it looks (one of the prettiest looking cars ever designed imho), the sound, and the feeling of heritage, its quite magical. And when it comes down to it, its not *too* shabby in the performance area either

As far as an every day driver - well I think you could drive it every day easily, but wether you would want to is another thing. I think by only driving it on weekends helps keep it feeling 'special' and the costs may become prohibitive (no idea how expensive the Noble is as a day to day prospect).

Just had a look at your profile- does that include upgrades or is it just repairs? That's a whole sh1tpile of cash if it's just repairs.

Sadly no, or tyres which are obviously consumables. I've been a bit unlucky as i know lots of owners have had no troubles and cheap servicing. The factory have been pretty good on the whole as well BUT..........so as you see Ferrari service will be comparitively cheap

Actually i should update my servicing costs on my profile just don't want the other half to see it!

Knowing my luck i'll pick a lemon! Must be fate though, as sat at the pub this evening and what pulls up but a rosso 355 spider. Sounded fantastic but guessing it was a tubi or similar.......

Anyhow i've located a Nero-nero 96 P plate, 22k miles, ffsh, £54k

What's the best way to get the mechanicals checked? Can i take it to a ferrari dealer for inspection before purchase? Should i expect a cam belt service to have been in the last 12 months? Will £5k be enough to allow for annual servicing?

Edited to add, one more thing, will say 7k miles a year kill the residuals?

Stu, if you look at this site:

www.verdiferrari.biz

They have a section for fixed price servicing that will give you some idea of what you are in for. Of course there are always other bits and pieces that come up at service time - for example I just had my belts done at Verdi's, service was £1400 plus VAT, but needed the tensioner bearings changed at the same time, they were about £250 each.

Belts on a '96 with 22k miles - well you would have expected it to have had a belt change in '99 and another in '02, so perhaps it is due for its belts again next year.

I would think that £5k just for servicing costs would more than cover you for the year, and I would be surprised if it were that much.

Re inspections, again Verdi did mine, was about £300, but they spent the whole day on the car, really took it to pieces, was the most thorough inspection I have ever had carried out on a car I was thinking of buying. Was very pleased with the level of detail they went into on the report, and I knew everything I was in for before purchasing.

Re 7k miles a year - well yes on a car with 22k on it, if you keep it for a few years, you are going to hurt the residuals, but then having said that, I think you would take a bigger hit on your GTO or if you got the M400.

Good luck!

Cheers ek993 - Much appreciated!

My biggest problem is going to be getting an opportunity to drive a 355 hard on a test drive to see whether it's going to be a goer. Dealers aren't keen for test drivers nailing it to 8000rpm in 3rd!

Am going to see the car next week. Turns out that the car is having it's belt done this week at Strasse in Leeds, they will also give it an independent inspection........any other obvious problems that i should look out for?
