Ferrari reveals F430 Spider

New Pininfarina design highlights spanking motor

Ferrari unveils the new F430 Spider at the Geneva Motor Show today. The new Spider is the drop-top version of the F430, whose success Ferrari hopes it will emulate.

Race-track developed, the Pininfarina-designed Spider sports all the 430's high technology and has, in Ferrari's words, "also been honed by the very latest aerodynamic calculation methodologies developed in collaboration with the Formula 1 Racing Division know as the Gestione Sportiva or GES.

"The new Ferrari’s meticulous aerodynamic and styling is reflected in the design of the rear spoiler incorporated in the engine cover, more muscular air intakes to channel air into the powerful engine, and the new rear diffuser integrated into the bumper which boasts race-derived dimensions", said Ferrari.

The large rear window offers a view of the Ferrari engine as before, while the F430 Spider's compact, fully automatic electric hood allows the engine to be seen all times.

The F430 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s new 490 hp, 4.3-litre 90-degree V8, a light, compact unit that punches out a specific power of 114 hp per litre with a weight-to-power ratio of 2.9Kg per hp (dry weight). The result is a sprints from 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds and a maximum speed of over 190mph.

If looks could kill I'd be dead. Look at that line! 430's look so much better side on but this seems to have even better proportions than the standard 430.

Wow. B-E-A-utiful.

I have a friend who has one on order. He ordered it 2 Years ago, and is no.20 on the list..... He's a Fessa nut and has a 360 Stadaly thingy allready...... I'm jealous as where the Hell could you park that, and not worry about it. They've tried to nick his 360 3 times so far...

Looks like I'm in a minority, but I don't think it looks that special.

Have always preferred Berlinetta Ferraris though, and some of the details on the 430 are hopeless on both models.

Bah. humbug

I think it's got better proportions than the 360. Less podgy around the waist i think........

I heard/read somewhere that it's got a simon cowell waistline due to crash regs....it might be the high arse that's putting some off. I think it's delicious.

Always been a Rosso Corsa fan myself, but have to say I love this in Grey as well...

Funny but most of my mates call me Fagin (though more for a passing resemblence to Ron Moody in Oliver Twist).

Agree on the comment about the 360.

But look at the rear shut lines. The tacked on effette look of the rear lights. The crass embossing of one door mirror. The front ait intakes. The quasimodo rear haunches (even Lambo binned that idea).

Think it's nice inside though.

I'll now get my coat.

IMO the 430 spider looks the mutts nuts. A proper beauty with some great lines.

But, the modena version looks kinda akward.

Fagin - now you mention it

Why not just take the 355 shape, add some fared in headlights, 500bhp and before you know it, instant classic!

I find "engine windows" to be rather tacky...

Steady!

I'm all for progress and radical design etc. And the 355 mods noted definitely wouldn't work (look at the 512M). Besides, it's already a guaranteed classic.

Side view on the 430 is fine up to the trailing edge of the rear wheel arch. The rear lights are trying too hard to be an Enzo.

The air intakes look much better body colour (from a photoshop I've seen on Fchat), but I think the whole front bumper treatment could have been a bit better done.

If I were ordering one I'd ask for a non-embossed wing mirror too.

And while I'm at it, underfloor diffusers were, I thought, done to avoid gauche spoilers everywhere*. But now are becoming a "feature". Bit like a baboon's arse.

"Modern"designs I like - Murci, AMV8, 360 CS (amazing what small tweaks can do to change the overall balance of a design). I'd have included the Maser Quattroporte too, but using Rover 45 back lights is sacrilege. If I thought harder, I could probably come up with a few more

That should stir the pot of debate a bit - you've gotta pick a pocket or two....

*gauche spoilers are cool in the right context.

Have you seen a 360/430 engine up close? It's a work of art. It NEEDS to be shown off.

Have to agree with Rawwr. It's a bit of a mish mash and far too busy. Oh, and the engine isn't a piece of art, it's a metal lump with some painted red bits.
