650S to 570S straight chop.
Discussion
What do you think?
I could order a highly specced 570S (gorgeous in white!) and chop in my 650S Spider without spending a penny.
Pros:
Latest model.
Brand new car.
Easily enough performance for just about anywhere I could ever drive.
Lovely looking thing (650S is a bit iffy).
Cons:
No open top driving.
No Aero - I love that thing bouncing about in the rear view mirror!
Not the same completely insane performance (even if I rarely use it!).
Not the same exclusivity (they'll sell bucket loads of 570S's, it'll be as common as muck)
Will the 650S do a RamboLambo and suddenly be worth the price of a small diamond mine in a few years?
With McLaren reportedly planning 17 new models in the next 5 years will the 570S become the "Go to car"?
Should I wait for a Spider 570S or just hang on for the 650S replacement (720?) and throw in the extra few quid?

Friends who have driven both (but own neither) all tell me they strongly preferred the 650S. I wouldn't do it.I could order a highly specced 570S (gorgeous in white!) and chop in my 650S Spider without spending a penny.

See if you can get them to lend you a 570s for a long weekend...you will soon know if the 'swap' is right for you....
Like you, I think he 570s looks better (in black), Its easier to get in and out of and more than fast enough (on the road). Also has the same engine, gearbox, doors and carbon tub (slightly updated) as the super series cars.
However I could not live without the active aero (for vanity reasons/ not dynamic performance driving reasons ) mine must be deployed at least every 30 seconds when I'm driving.
The great thing about these choices is they are reversible........you could swap into the 570s and then in the 720s (P14) when it comes out.
With regards values....most likely the 650s will lose a lot less over the next 12 months than a specked up brand new 570s (mainly because the 650s is in its 2nd year of deprecation and already lost 33% of it original list price) Crystal ball time...in 2 years time the 650s will be worth about £20k more than the 570s

I like to swap/update my cars regularly as its part of the fun ( my previous 2 supercars lasted 6 and 9 months )but I'm not even vaguely tempted to swap my 650S spider for a 570S no matter how good it maybe, no matter how much cash they gave me back.
650S prices will certainly firm up having taken the initial new car hit and with 12C prices rising.
570S will lose a similar % from new as your 650S so this time next year you would be at least a further £25k + worse off between the 2 cars
540/570S is the entry level, volume car, into the brand and therefore likely to be more common and abundant as a used car.
In comparison there are probably only 200 650S in the UK
You say you like the open top so as a minimum I would resist the itch until a 570S spider version is available and review the situation then.
Lets just say I think you will still be pleasantly surprised then at the cost to change if you fancy something newer.
Personally I'm looking forward and holding off to the P14 650S replacement although if its a £300k car and I need to throw a further £150k at it I think I will pass on that.

I am not a fan of convertibles and not a huge fan of how the 650 looks, but even I would not contemplate that swap. I'd stick with the 650 until the successor is announced. The 650 will lose a lot of money and will make the upgrade to the 650 successor an even more painful financial proposition.
I would consider a 675 Coupe if you want to spend upgrade money now as I think that car is the first McLaren that somehow looks just right / not disjointed (P1 excluded) and won't lose too much money (esp as long as this crazy market continues)

650S spider to 675LT Coupe is roughly Doubling your budget +£180k.I would consider a 675 Coupe if you want to spend upgrade money now as I think that car is the first McLaren that somehow looks just right / not disjointed (P1 excluded) and won't lose too much money (esp as long as this crazy market continues)
As good as the LT maybe I don't think many could justify that expenditure in terms of the gain.
100% increase for a 10% return just does not stack in my books, no matter what type of man maths I try to apply.
Would love a 675LT spider and was very close to putting in a deposit, having had a letter of intent down for 12 months but in the end just could not justify the extra money which is now in a flat returning me 6% yield

I found the 570 interior quite cheap and flimsy looking in places. More Renault than McLaren
I agree it does not have the class of the 650S for sure and I think this is where they have saved some money IMHO as the rest of the car is cracking even if its not quite 650S cracking That said I do like the two tone leather seat option and I think there is more options to personalise the car which is good given its going to be a "volume" car

Ahh but you could've flipped than LT Spider and made £100k.... Beefmeister said:

Agreed but it wasn't a certainty and didn't want to borrow money or px the 650S to fund it. With hindsight though you are right. There I was trying to be Captain Sensible.
I'm a car enthusiast and not a speculator.
Still reckon the 650S will come good long term though
